A Separation of Church and State
Purpose: To persuade.
Specific Purpose: To persuade the audience that the word “God” should be removed from any government building, document, legal tender, the pledge of allegiance, and anything that pertains to the federal, state, and/or local government.
Central Idea: The federal government should not mention God in government because not everyone believes in God, the Constitution never mentions the word “God”, and because the first amendment of the Bill of Rights forbids Congress from both promoting one religion over others and also restricting an individual’s religious practices.
Attention Getter: “One Nation Under God.” “In GOD We Trust.” “GOD Bless America.” We are constantly reminded by our pledge of allegiance, our money, our government buildings, and our legal documents that we believe in this one God… I personally do believe in this one God that our money refers to, but not everyone does. You could simply write to your state senators, and pressure them on how this issue violates the rights of certain citizens. Another thing you can do is join organizations such as American Atheists, who “fight to protect the absolute separation of religion from government (atheists.org).” Other organizations include Americans United For Separation of Church and State, whose mission is “preserving the constitutional principle of church-state separation as the only way to ensure religious freedom for all Americans (au.org).” Lastly, and one method I do not recommend so much, is to bring the topic up during dinner with your girlfriend’s/boyfriend’s conservative parents, or with your extremely religious grandparents during breakfast…but like I said, I don’t quite recommend those two
