What is Fear?
Topic: Fear
Thesis statement: Fear is something that many of people try to avoid; they don’t realize that it is a feeling that that activates our natural survival instincts and according to Walter Bradford Cannon, activates fight or flight mechanisms helping us to survive. Everyone’s life is changed by fear weather they know it or not. According to Psychology Today, there are five different types of fear “Extinction—the fear of death, Mutilation—the fear of losing any part of our precious bodily structure, Loss of Autonomy—the fear of being immobilized, paralyzed, or restricted, Separation—the fear of abandonment, and Ego-death—the fear of humiliation (Albrecht 1)” As can be seen, this shows the vastness of the emotion of fear and how it’s an action reaction feeling. If you feel afraid you will do something different, whether it is to try harder to stay out of harm’s way or to try to fit in more. Fear is not a feeling that I love to feel, but because I know its purpose and effects I respect and appreciate it.
