“Hey,” I said to him, not turning around. “I’m sorry about all that. I didn’t think it was that bad.”
“Oh, it’s fine. I just want to know if you are okay.” He started to wrap his arms around me, but I shrugged him off, pretending that I just wanted to get everything clean.
“I’m fine.” I said, dumping the green beans into a container. “I just hope Jasper’s going to be okay. You have to believe me when I tell you that he’s really a good kid. He’s just misguided.”
“Misguided?” George asked. “He’s horrible.”
I was shocked at what he said. I threw down the spoon I was holding and spun around. “Horrible?” My voice was getting louder.
“Yes, he’s horrible. Can’t you see that?” he said loudly, waving his arms.
“How dare you call him that? You don’t know him!” I was yelling now.
“I know he lives in a nice house with a nice family. He has people who love him. His life is easy. I know he does things that hurt you. Why are you making excuses for him?”
“Because no one else will! No one else will stick up for him!” I screamed. I heard my parents moving around in their bedroom above us, but they never came down.
“Carolyn, you can’t do that anymore. He’s a bad kid,” George told me, pushing my long hair back behind my ear.
