Would you pay to kill yourself? I know that I would not. If you answered no to that question, then what reason do you have start smoking cigarettes? In the article “Do smokers know how much they spend on cigarettes?” I read that that the average smoker pays about 1,500 dollars a year for cigarettes, but smokers in New York City spend closer to 3,300 dollars (Berlin 1) This amount of money that a person who smokes spends daily, weekly, and yearly has no health or self help benefits. People who smoke cigarettes are not only addicted to the tobacco itself, but they are getting addicted to the chemical nicotine inside of the cigarette. But even if you are around someone who smokes, there are risks to you. Everyone can be exposed to secondhand smoke in public places where smoking is allowed, such as some restaurants, shopping centers, public transportation, or parks. Secondhand smoke causes lung cancer even in people who have never smoked. (The American Cancer Society medical and editorial content team 1) I am ending my speech with the emphasis that smoking cigarettes is dangerous to the smoker and the people around them. There are ways to quit smoking such as nicotine replacement therapy where there are gums, patches, inhalers, sprays, and lozenges that all have nicotine in them, just without the tobacco. Also there are medications such as Zyban and Chantix that can be prescribed to help with the feelings of cravings and withdrawals(DerSarkissian 1). Everyone is different so they have to find out which method of quitting would be the most effective. So after all of these facts and reasons I gave, that smoking cigarettes is not only affecting you but the people around you, I am going to ask you the same question that I asked at the beginning of my speech, Would you pay to kill
