“..What makes you a man is not the ability to make a child, it is the courage to raise one”(Obama). Gay adoption is the adoption of children by lesbian or gay adults. Same-sex couples around the world have hopes to raise a family of their own; unfortunately, for homosexual couples, starting a family does not come as easy as it does for straight couples. Few men choose to use surrogate mothers; some lesbians have their own children through fertility clinics and sperm banks; and some couples choose to adopt. Adoption laws for same-sex couples in the United States vary widely state to state. Being gay is more open and seen as a new trend that many are being apart of. There is an estimate that 9 million of Americans identify themselves as either gay, bisexual, or transgender, that is 3.7% of the United States population. The age of the child vary widely also. For the many children that do not have the opportunity to live in a home, homosexuals can offer. “Same sex adoptions are needed because there are so many children waiting to be adopted and same sex couples are able to provide the children with stable homes along with families” (LGBT Adoption Advantages). There are more children than there are homes and if more people are given the opportunity to adopt, there will be homes available for children. Foster homes are temporary; adoptive families are forever. When children are often being transferred home to home it may leave the child thinking little of themselves. The child may think that hat no one wants them which is why they cannot keep a consistent home, and that is the worst feeling any child would want to experience. Many foster homes are only in the program for the money; adoptive families want the child as much as the child wants a home. Homosexuals cannot have children naturally, so it provides a good option for them to have children, which might even cut down on the need for surrogate parents. Is gay adoption healthy for children? Gay adoption opens up more homes for children and provides a better household environment than a heterosexual household. Same-sex adoptions should be allowed all children around the world. There are so many children needing families that it would be a shame to not let someone adopt them just because of their sexual orientation. Children need to be adopted and gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender couples can provide more than what most heterosexuals can offer. Denying gay adoption is punishing innocent children that do not deserve to be punished. There is no reason why gay couples should not have the same rights as straight couples when it comes to adoption.
