One in five women will be a will be sexually assaulted during her lifetime. From a global standpoint 683,000 women are forcibly raped each year. This number equals to about 56,000 women a month, 1,800 women a day, and 78 women per hour. The freakish part of it all is that only 16% of rape cases are ever reported to the police.

The trauma doesn’t end and you’ll always find yourself running from this shame that you feel inside. Nothing ever goes okay with running from the truth. In most cases like this, the facts are clear, the pain is acknowledgeable, and the burden is noticeable. However, most victims like Smith, remove the truth so all they see is “black and white.”
No one should ever have to hide their pain just to ease it. However, in reality people do it every day. People wake up every day, to start fresh, to be renewed. The society and world we live in doesn’t protect us from every difficulty we face. However, shame is a word that we punish our rape victims with. The shame of being victimized, slut-shamed, and looked down upon. Of course, no one ever wants to relive a moment of grief but opening those channels of communication are so important in our community.
Woman who have been raped feel themselves as worthless and weak. Rape isn’t something you should dehumanize a victim on. You don’t know what anyone’s been through until you’ve taken a clear look in their shoes. It’s a true blessing that Smith, is a survivor through all that she’s been through. Most victims of rape contemplate suicide and some even commit it. What’s even more shocking is, you could be sitting across a survivor of rape and never know.
