Introduction
Drunk driving has been a huge factor in everyday life. People have lost their lives because of other people who are careless and get behind the wheel while intoxicated. We typically don’t consider drunk driving as a big deal like we would a bombing or a killing of someone famous. It’s sad to see that people are dying every day because of this one bad decision. I recently lost one of my friends Jacob Salazar to a driver who was driving while intoxicated. In January of 2016, Jacob was driving home one night when all of a sudden a car swerved into the median and came into oncoming traffic and struck the front of Jacobs’s car. Let that person know you will not let them drive drunk and tell your friends to let this person know. They will get angry and may not want to hang out with you, but what if, if only a slight chance, you actually open his/her eyes and they stop. Multiply that by others doing that with their friends. We now have a movement. I had a friend back in the military who used to get wasted!! He'd never listen. So we'd wait till he was drinking and ask him for his keys to get something out of the car. Whenever he'd try to leave he'd ask for his keys but he'd be so drunk he would never remember who he gave the keys to so he'd have to drive home with someone else. Unfortunately, he was stopped one time with his girlfriend, arrested for DWI, and ultimately discharged from the military. But I know on at least 10 occasions, we kept the city safer because of what we did”. The fourth question was “Do you personally agree with the laws against DWI/ DWI homicide?” and he wrote back saying “No! I don't believe in involuntary manslaughter in DWI accidents. You don't involuntary get in your vehicle drunk and drive off. Every accident involving a DWI, should be voluntary manslaughter with a minimum sentence of 15 years WITH NO GOOD TIME SERVED! You will hear of a vehicle getting 11 years but when the dust is settled, we will be lucky to see him serve”. Lastly I asked “How do you handle a DWI situation/DWI pullover?” and his final thoughts were “ I was part of the DWI Unit for APD for 5 years, within that time, I received an award for having the most DWI arrests in one year for the whole state. I'm not one to toot my horn so the reason why I mention this is because as much as I hate people driving drunk, I still deal with them with the upmost respect. Not for them but because I represent a department I am proud to be a part of. Most thanked me for the treating them with respect and not belittling them. To date, I have had people come up to me whom I've arrested
