Topic: Resolved: The United States should lift the embargo on Cuba.
Good afternoon. The topic of this speech is on the United States should or should not lift the Cuban embargo. This is a very short backstory behind the embargo placed on Cuba. The U.S. placed an trade embargo on Cuba in 1962 and added travel restrictions in 1963. The economic embargo was placed because Cuba had taken oil-refineries which were American owned as their own and Cuba did not give compensation to the U.S. Since then, the U.S. disliked Cuba and mostly Cuba’s leader Fidel Castro who wanted to be a ruling leader and killed many people who were against him. Castro did many disturbing activities as well as shutting down newspapers, and businesses that would give out criticism from the public. Human rights abuse continue to increase, not an effect of the embargo but that the government continues its ways of horrible treating. The Human Rights Watch World Report 2017 of Cuba explains, “The Cuban government continues to repress dissent and punish public criticism. It now relies less than in past years on long-term prison sentences to punish its critics, but short-term arbitrary arrests of human rights defenders, independent journalists, and others have increased dramatically in recent years. Other repressive tactics employed by the government include beatings, public shaming, and termination of employment.” Human Rights are denied to the Cubans and people who defend human rights or are against it are given terrible punishments. The embargo did not affect the Human Rights use but it increased drastically so lifting the embargo would encourage the Cubans to spread there aspects against the Cuban government to the world.
