Thank you Jamie for an interesting and moving speech
In Jamie’s speech, she highlighted the consequences of having no access to clean drinking water, the actions we can take to change this and the reasons why we should volunteer or donate money to this cause.
a. She rightly asserted that a lack of clean water would lead to the spread of water-borne diseases which is the cause of thousands of deaths every day.
b. She also claimed that the shortage of potable water sources leads to a loss of productivity and helps perpetuate the poverty cycle.
c. Hence, she advocated that we volunteer to go on overseas community involvement programs and donate money to projects …show more content…
Her claims were backed up by reports from international bodies such as The World Health Organisation (WHO), newspapers like The Washington Post, and papers published in credible journals like Population Health Management.
c. She provided statistics, a form of aggregate examples, on the number of deaths due to water-related diseases, time taken to collect water, the relationship between education and income.
d. She also mentioned a variety of individual examples like Water Wells for Africa and Lifestraw.
e. In her first point on water-borne diseases, she could have given some examples of such diseases such as cholera, typhoid and dysentery (World Health Organization, 2015).
f. Another suggestion is that she can consider including more narratives about a specific child or woman who has no access to water. Through narratives, she can tap on pathos and ethos to evoke sympathy and make people more inclined to take action. Studies have shown that people are more willing to help a single child, than millions (Västfjäll, Slovic, & Mayorga, 2014).
