High school speech
Today, after around 4 months of anticipation and anxiety, the veil hiding the high school results will finally be uncovered. For some, the result hiding behind the veil for 4 months will be satisfying, and will cool the anxiety down and reaffirm their self esteem. For other unlucky souls, however, the truth hidden behind that placid veil may be upsetting, and a huge blow to their self esteem. This high school admissions system works in this cruel but robotic way, sadly, and many 8th graders, as a result feel rejected and hopeless when they receive their results. All of you will likely get into the high school of your choice, and will be on the winning end of the cruel computer program that determines our high school placement, but for some of you, there will be no joy and

Well, I'm here to tell you that you shouldn't feel that way, because the high school admissions merely denotes what high school you're going to, and therefore, it doesn't denote your future life, or your college placement. When you receive the letter that you did not want to receive, you may feel as if high school will affect your life, but in reality, it's your work ethic and attitudes that will. In reality, if you get into a "bad" high school or are forced to participate in Round 2, you have an equal chance of getting in to Harvard, assuming you keep your great attitude and work ethic you maintain in ESMS. Additionally, the high school you get into does not denote your smartness as the DOE HS COMPUTER MAKES MISTAKES. Yes, those mistakes may take you on the road you didn't want to go, but if you drive quickly, you'll be back to where you would be. Besides, perhaps that dark road isn't so bad after all. The point I'm trying to make is that no matter whether you got in to the school of your choice or did not, you are still awesome people and shouldn't let this letter that determines what high school you

High school is a staple of American culture. Popular culture is littered with high school imagery: cheerleaders at the homecoming game, senior prom, and finally, graduation. It is a major time of growth for adolescents and serves as a stepping stone into the adult world, giving students the skills and experiences needed to be successful later in life. However our perception of high school and the ‘high school experience’ is rapidly changing as alternatives to traditional schooling appear. An excellent example of this is an emerging program commonly referred to as ‘early college high school’, a duel enrollment program that allows high school students to receive an associate’s degree while earning their high school diploma.…

Précis Frank Bruni’s article, “How to Survive the College Admissions Madness” (2015), criticizes American’s that emphasize that college is the most important and beneficial way to ensure a promising future. Bruni supports his position by referring to anecdotal stories of past experiences of college applicants, listing the qualifications of the applicants to make them relatable, and metaphorical comparisons to develop the author’s opinion. Bruni’s purpose is to admonish the concept of the college admission process measuring a person's worth in order to alleviate the disappointment students feel after rejection. Due to the author’s condescending tones this article is written to college bound students addressing the obsession to receive a…

Each college student knows what it is like to constantly worry whether or not the score on the ACT is high enough to get accepted into a school or if certain AP credits will transfer to the school of choice. It’s my junior year of high school, and I had just begun looking at colleges and universities I believed would suit me personally and educationally. Each school was severely critiqued on certain elements they had to offer, such as, majors/minors, clubs and organizations, pre-professional programs, and even extracurricular activities. This was going to be the place I would ultimately spend the next four years of my life, so I needed to make the perfect decision.…

Prior to high school, my middle school recommended that I attend “Grant High School”, which was looked down upon by my parents due to its reputation. Grant High School only has a 78% graduation rate. My father had been planning on surprising me with an opportunity of a lifetime and began planning since I was in 7th grade. I left my friends and current life behind to move to a place called Oak Park to attend Oak Park High School, which is ranked in the top 100 public schools in the nation and a graduation rate of 99%. I truly believe this is the reason I am here at San Diego State University today, because I was given an opportunity I may not have received by attending Grant High School.…

I have realized that my grades don’t necessarily reflect on who I am, but my progression and potential, and in comparison to previous years, I have progressed profoundly because I now understand that what counts in high school is what you make of it for yourself, not changing yourself to meet everyone’s expectations. This idea of transitioning…

For many students, stress seems to walk hand in hand with college applications; From writing essays to taking various standardized tests, attempting to get into college takes hard work, and sometimes it can all come crashing down when the infamous rejection letter arrives in the mail. After being turned down from the colleges of her dreams, Suzy Lee Weiss wrote the article “To (All) the Colleges That Rejected Me” which describes how colleges lie about their expectations of applicants. The author writes that colleges expect much more than they actually say they are looking for, and that acceptance is biased towards certain people or qualities. The arguments made by this author tend to lack proper supporting evidence and also include multiple logical fallacies which ultimately make her case against college admissions ineffective.…

The day of August 27, 2012 I was officially titled a freshman. One look down those unknown red and blue walls, will forever change my perspective of high school. There was an instant moment of disbelief in my freshman, I was terrified, and no thought came to mind as to how I was going to survive high school for the next four years. Of course I knew it'll be different from my tiny middle school, but will it be like the cliché movies about the upcoming of age, or resemble the happiest times of life. From that first day, I knew I wasn’t like everyone else.…

Unlike many of my peers, my life story is slightly different. Many of my peers share the story of living in a single parent home, being homeless, violence, and poverty. However, in my case, living in a two parent household is strange to hear about to my peers. For me, living in a two parent household means more work because of my desire to receive a full scholarship. Upon my research, I noticed that many of my older peers would receive better college financial opportunities because of their life experiences.…

At the end of high school my GPA was a 3.6 and although my SAT scores were in the 2300s, I feel like what really got me into all the schools I wanted to was my personal statement. I wrote about life as a hispanic and how hard it is to be discriminated in everything you do, and also about some tragic events in my life. I saw better qualified students get rejected as all my acceptance letters came in the mail. Seeing better qualified people not make it into Berkley made me feel like I did not deserve the opportunity given to me.…

I probably would like to go to an engineering school because math and science are my favorite subjects. I also want to go to a prestigious school, so thats why I’m taking extra credit courses. Because if I go to a good school, then I would probably end up with a good job with a nice income, to later marry a nice girl and have a nice family. What I’m trying to say here is that, every decision that I take leads to another decision and so on, so that at the end, I accomplish my goals and life desires. It might not go as you plan it, because anything can happen during the journey, but at least your pointing your arrow towards a target.…

Those meaningless diplomas have been handed to those students that have been given a free ride throughout High School. In today’s society, we continue to see students graduating and lacking the proper standard education. This is why one third of students entering…

Failures are what make us human, and sometimes you have to take one step back to take 2 steps forward. Monmouth County in New Jersey contains some of the top vocational high schools in the country. The highly competitive nature of these programs makes them highly sought after by many residents including myself. There are five vocational schools located within Monmouth County, but students can only apply to one, and only one student from each town is accepted. It was my dream to attend one of these prestigious schools, but events do not always unfold as planned.…
