Persuasive Speech For Adoption

Almost six years ago Sylvia, a very good friend of the family, came to my wife and I with a very serious problem that she needed assistance with. She discovered that although she was on birth control, she found herself pregnant with her sixth child. Sylvia was married but her and her husband struggled with the fact that he had just lost his job and they were barely making it with the children they already had. They knew they could not provide the kind of life for the child they wanted so they asked if we could assist them with putting the child up for adoption. I have to say that it was probably one of the most awkward conversations I will ever have in my life. Can you just imagine speaking to some of your closest friends and saying to them “I would like to take your child from you and raise them as my own”? I know this is not how I meant it but I felt like this is what it would sound like coming from my mouth. My wife and I were terrified for a number of reasons but we had them come over and we all sat down and had the discussion. To our surprise, they were extremely happy and told us that this is what they were hoping and the very reason they came to us before an adoption agency but wanted us not to feel pressured and to make the decision on our own. We advised them that if we went through with this there would have to be some very serious decisions to be made and some boundaries would have to be put into place and that we would like to have the adoption made legal and closed. It was Sylvia’s husband saying that he didn’t think he could go through with the whole adoption. My wife and I were mortified and we cried the entire night because we had become so emotionally invested at that point, not to mention how the kids would feel it we just snatched the idea of a new baby brother from them. The next day we called and told them that we did not want to be the cause of any heartache for them or the baby nor did we want our friendship to be ruined because of this and that we understood if they could not live without this precious baby. We explained that we would pack everything that was given to us from the baby shower and the stuff we purchased and they could come get the baby the next day.
