Hello Mr. Cohen and Mr. Nittolo! I just wanted to email you regarding school lunch drinks. About a month ago, me and many others got the opportunity to take a survey on school lunch and one big debate was the chocolate milk versus water. A teacher asked why students couldn't have free water over free milk, as her children as well as many others would choose water over milk at lunch time, as it is a time to refule and rehydrate yourself. Mrs. Kim (the lunch lady) explained to us that the chocolate milk has nutrients and vitamins necessary for the daily intake of those specific things, but today I made a shocking discovery. I was having a piece of a chocolate bar today and noticed that a Hershey's 6 inch long and 2 inch tall candy bar has 24 grams of sugar. I remember that just 1 carton of the chocolate milk provided by our food service has 22 grams of sugar in it. Yes, I am aware that there are many more things that go into the chocolate milk like vitamins and carbs and fats and many other things, but 22 grams of sugar is a LOT of sugar. After researching, many …show more content…
Although it is biased, many students in my class and other classes refuse to drink this water, and instead prefer bottled water, like the water that we have in our lunch room. This is something I've been thinking about for a while, and was just wondering if it was possible to maybe get free water with lunch. A large water bottle costs $1.00, and if a student buys lunch with a water, it will cost them a total of 3.85, which is $1.17 more than the average cost of a school lunch, which is $2.68. It may not seem like a lot, but water is precious to a human being, as our bodies are legitimatelly made up of about 60% water. Just thought it was something I could suggest and talk to you about. Thanks so

Following the pasteurization of milk, many organizations, including the US government, launched campaigns and programs in favor of the vitamins and calcium in milk. These stemmed off decreasing milk sales thought to contribute to lower vitamin and iron levels in children (Bower Mateer 165). The first major development in promoting milk was a pilot program to include it in school lunches. The program was launched with 15 low-income schools in the Chicago area in June of 1940, these schools subsidized milk costs making it affordable for students (Gunderson). This expanded throughout the United States in the next couple years as more schools began adopting milk cartons as part of school lunch.…

A morning edition of national public radio, titled, “Lunch Ladies Want Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act to Lighten Up” featured Jean Ronnie, president of the School Nutrition Association. I chose this because Ronnie works directly with schools, lunch ladies and makes a lot of the recipes for school lunch herself. Ronnie described one of the students favorite meals, “Fresh roasted chicken, cornbread that 's homemade, apple kohlrabi slaw and strawberries” that can no longer be served because of the sodium content. This rule among many other restricts snack and meal options for schools and students. I personally love having healthier options to choose from in the vending machines.…

Certain kids have different experiences with their school’s lunches, but it’s safe to assume that the majority of children do not enjoy them one bit. At a school in LA, one child says “The healthier it gets the more disgusting it is” which is just another reason why healthy school lunches are not a good idea. Some children at the school can barely describe what “it” is. Kids want to eat what tastes good, not what tastes like garbage, no matter how good it is for them. It’s not just the taste though; it’s the serving size as well.…
