General Purpose: To persuade.
Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience that capital punishment is unjust.
Thesis/Central Idea: Capital punishment is immoral and savage, conveys a hazardous danger of punishing the guiltless, and is an ineffective deterrent of crime.

Introduction
I. (Attention Getter) Pledge of allegiance - I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
II. (Relevancy Statement) Thirty-one words tightly compacted into one sentence, a sentence that is more universally known and more often repeated in America than any other. How many hundreds of times has each of us recited those words?
Do we reflect on the meaning of the words embodied in that sentence?
III. (Credibility Statement) In my opinion, no, because justice is fairness and liberty is freedom. Yet we live in a world where capital punishment is utilized in more than 30 states and people die every day because of crimes that they allegedly committed.
IV. (Reveal Topic) Today I will explain to you the three reasons I feel capital punishment is unjust.
V. (Preview) Capital punishment:
A. Is unethical and barbaric
B. Carries a dangerous risk of punishing the innocent
