No one likes living alone on an island with nothing to do or no one to be with, for animals cages in zoos are like islands for humans. They have no one to be with and nothing to do. Surplus animals are killed or sold to dealers or circuses every year and the main reasons for the above acts are given as old age or over population. Culling of animals is very popular in many countries in Europe. One recent example was the killing of a tiger on 8th june 2016 in a zoo in London. The zoo authorities reported that the animal had caught a very unfriendly disease due to which he had been killed, but after a few weeks reports showed that he was killed because of old age. Some animals in zoos are used as a source of entertainment of the visitors, animals like penguins and monkeys are used to make the children coming into zoos happy, when they are performing or doing goofy things it looks like they are very happy but in real life they have been put on anti-depressants to hide their depression and boredom in the zoos. If the zoos aren’t able to catch any type of animal they find a similar looking animal and try to make it look like the animals they don’t have like donkeys are painted in a zoo in Africa to look like zebras and dogs are painted to look like foxes and before you know they are killed or sent to dealers as soon as their colors start fading and the animal is hesitant for a repaint. A large number of animals are sold of to dealers who export these animals to either animal poachers, hunting ranches or unaccredited zoos.Zoos not only mistreat adult animals but also babies, many animal babies are put up in auctions because they lose “ youthful appeal”. This kind of ruthlessness and irresponsibility must not be accepted from the zoo and must be put to a

Captive animals who have outlived their ‘usefulness’ are often sold to hunting ranches, pet shops, circuses, exotic meat industries and research facilities. These ‘useless’ animals are often animals who have aged and are less active or baby animals who have stopped being cute as they bring in less visitors. In some cases, the surplus animals are fed to their fellow zoo inhabitants. Through this method, the zoos are able to gain more money to spend creating artificial environments to house more captive animals who will, eventually, suffer from “zoocolsis” and die…

The question of the impact of captivity on animals remains one of the most challenging and controversial over the several decades. Some people disagree that zoos are an important part of animals conservation as they believe sanctuaries in animal's native habitat would bring more positive results as animals suffer from the constant human presence and lack of space. Others argue that zoos provide animals with even better conditions than in the wild and that without zoos many conservation programs would not exist so that for endangered species it is better to live in captivity than become extinct. Both opinions can exist as there are many zoos in the world and their facilities contrast greatly. It is obvious that ill-designed zoos does not serve…

    Keeping Animals In Zoos

Animal captivity is a cruel, miserable, and an unhappy thing for animals in zoos. Zookeepers are not feeding animals enough food or giving animals enough space to play in the cages at zoos and aquariums, too. Animals all over the world need more care, more safety and more room to play with their type of species. Animals keep dying because zoo keepers and owners can not take good enough care of the animals, or have the time to feed the animals, or take the time to take good care of the animals. Animals in zoos are trapped in cages, all day every day.…

Though, I know the establishment of zoos gave people the opportunity to see and learn about different animals from around the world, they play a role in animal conservation and education. It is a way of preserving species of animals that may become extinct in the future. What we do not realize is by keeping these animals in confinement, it is an act of cruelty and we do not know what takes place behind the scenes of the shows and displays of these animals. Studies have indicated that confined animals living with uncommon social groups, different climates, and unsuitable diets, unlike animals living in the wild, can lead to animals suffering from psychological and physical problems such as zoochosis. Zoochosis is a kind of behavior common in…

Many species are going extinct or becoming endangered in the wild (theguardian.com). By having these animals in zoos it is keeping them form going completely extinct. The animals may not survive in the wild due to natural causes such as being hunted by predators, natural weather patterns, or becoming sick or injured. Any of these can cause an animal to become extinct or endangered. If there are a few in captivity they can reproduce and keep the animal from going fully extinct.…

Have you ever realized how zoo animals live? Imagine seeing an elephant in the zoo just standing there doing nothing, but then in movies and pictures you see them always walking and playing just always doing something. They don't have that choice in the zoo. Animals should not be kept in zoos or in captivity because they don't have the life they would have in their natural habitat, they are not taken care of well and they are not happy.…

In these zoos, animals are treated cruelly and are killed for no reason, animals go through mental/psychological disorders, and lack the nutritious values that are only given to them in the wild. These reasons prove that zoos need to be shut down and these helpless animals deserve to live and thrive in the environment and habitat they come from. It is disturbing to think of how positive zoos are seen and how they are a popular attraction for people of all ages. Next time people go to a zoo, they should look closely at these animals and see the misery and depression in their…

In Who Belongs in the Zoo, the author discusses the necessity to transform zoos from confined spaces to well-facilitated expanses fostering a healthy living for their inhabitants. Most of the existing zoos are inapt for many animals and adversely impact the animals’ physical and mental well-being. Animals such as, elephants, bears and giraffes need an extensive space to strive else, they may suffer from numerous health complications or even, premature death. Furthermore, the author points out that a few national zoos which house creatures humanely are sufficient to cater to tourists. It is unreasonable to try and house every species in every zoo and rather, irrational to house certain species in their non-native environments.…

With the biotic world still being destroyed and harmed at an alarming rate, entire biomes are endangered and whole ecosystems are threatened by anthropogenic pressures. These changes globally have impelled zoos and aquariums to create and establish conservation benefits. This coupled with the growth in economic rationalism and the rise of corporate management, rationalises the feasibility of projects in terms of economic efficiencies. Which has seen the battle between balancing of public entertainment and money with the welfare of animals. It is argued that zoos need to maintain a more concentrated engagement with a range of ethical and pragmatic consideration in the appraisal of animal welfare under the conditions for research.…

Khana Bosky states that, “Their condition in captivity is comparable to institutionalised mentally ill human patients. The boredom and loss of control over their lives drives sensitive animals out of their minds.” The consequences animals face during this type of stereotypical behavior are deadly. When frustrated animals escape their cages or enclosed environment in a zoo they desperately run freely hurting themselves and the public. However, at the end they pay the price.…

Animals need to have access to enrichment activities that allow them to express their natural behavior. These enrichment activities or toys aim to encourage natural behaviours such as hunting, use of scent and hiding food, provide animal welfare by increasing exercise, satisfying ‘behavioural needs’ and stimulating animals, and to promote visitor education so that visitors can gain a better understanding of their natural behaviours and interests. An example of enrichment provided to animals in captivity is the lions. Lions are given ostrich eggs or pumpkin seeds to spark their curiosity, fragrant herbs and oils to excite the senses and specially made toys to encourage natural behaviours such as hunting and stalking. Another animal which receives enrichment is bears.…

Many zoos are businesses and known for only caring about the money, and not actually taking care of the animals. Zoos should not hold wild animals captive because it shortens their life and makes the quality of their life worse. Some zoos are known for educating children, however, that is not something all zoos do.…
