Although most agree that sideline cheer could and should not be named a sport, competitive cheerleading most definitely is. Since the beginning of time, groups of people have come together to cheer on their favorite sports team. However, “…it wasn’t until the late 1800s that organize cheering came to be,” (History of Cheerleading). At first, cheerleading was a male-dominate sport. However, when the men left for war in 1923, women took it over. At this point, they weren’t permitted to compete, but were allowed to join a squad. They wore floor-length skirts and varsity sweaters rather than the tight tops and short skirts worn today. By the time 1970s rolled around, cheerleading had completely changed.
