I’m sure each and every one of you have attended a circus, been to an aquarium, or watched a horse race at some point in your life. The animals are cute and the tricks they do are amazing! But behind the scenes, you have no idea how gruesome they are actually treated. Here are some statistics to think about. 96% of circus animals spend their life behind bars. 98% of marine animals die in the process of being moved into a tank. And last but not least, are the greyhounds. Once they begin their racing careers they are kept in cages for 20 hours at a time with only enough room to barely turn around. If these dogs are incapable or racing, which occurs often due to their poor living conditions, they are usually killed. In result of this, an estimate …show more content…
Here’s mine, I believe that Seaworld should stop capturing and confining their whale species. To help support my opinion, I have found a great amount of evidence that proves the evils of Seaworld from an online site called SeaWorld of Hurt: Where Happiness Tanks. My first fact includes the Beluga whales. This species is known as the smallest type of whales with a life expectancy of about 35-50 years. Seaworld's aquarium in San Antonio has taken yet another marine animal life in their tanks, this is their second beluga whale death this year. After only 3 weeks of being brought into this world, the prematurely born whale died. This calf was malnourished and was not gaining weight. Every since being taken away from its mother at birth, the baby would not take SeaWorld's’ supplement and henceforth died. The facility in Georgia had a recent death to their baby beluga a month prior to this one. Some may say this is coincidence, but I believe there is no other way to look at this other than these animals could have been prospering in their natural …show more content…
Their average maximum is 60-70 years for males and 80-100 years for females. With this being said, the average lifespan for Orcas in SeaWorld’s so called “care” is a grand average ranging from 9-13 years. For the Orcas that are fortunate enough to be in the wild, they swim on average about 100 miles a day. When the whales have been captured and put into their tanks they would need to swim 1,208 laps around their tank or swim 3,105 times back and forth in the longest part of their tank to reach that number. To make this easier to understand, their tank size is equivalent to a bathtub to us! Because these confined animals are unable to hunt from themselves in the wild, they are given a gelain food supplement made out of the ‘leftovers’ from pig and cow tendons, ligaments, and boiled skin. Typically, you would find an Orca eating fish or a marine animal, not waste from a dead land species. There is one SeaWorld orca weighing in at 12,000 pounds that consumes 83 pounds of gelatin

Male orcas have a lifespan of about 60 to 70 years while female orcas can live for 90 years, but those held in captivity see an average of nine years. It is not uncommon to see orcas with collapsed dorsal fins. Most orcas held in captivity are ill and as a result their dorsal fin begins to bend. On top of the terrible living space, the trainers that work with the orcas have limited knowledge in marine biology. The trainers are performers not biologists, their job is to put on a good show not to educate the public.…

Blackfish tells us there are over 70 cases regarding trainer deaths caused by orcas. Each SeaWorld Park holds over 600 pages of recalling unanticipated behaviors of the orcas towards the trainers and nearly 100 of those pages includes incidents of the whales physically hurting the trainers. In SeaWorld Orlando Florida on February 24, 2010; Dawn Brancheau was killed by one of their bull whales, Tilikum, also known as Tilli. She suffered from a broken jaw, a dislocated elbow, a fractured vertebra, and so much more.…

In reality, the blame should have been placed on the parks. They are the ones responsible for capturing the whales and not properly informing trainers of the dangers they may encounter. Scientific information on these animals is beneficial to have, but not at the expense of the animals and the people working with them lives. While The Guardian believes that zoos are entitled to confining animals to cages in zoos, I do not believe they should be showcased for mere entertainment and revenue.…

The premier of Western Australia, Colin Barnett, had announced the shark culling policy in 2014 in response to the shark attack fatalities. The shark culling policy authorizes sharks larger than three metres, such as: the great white, bull and tiger sharks to be slaughtered. Sharks smaller than three metres would be liberated offshore. I highly believe that sharks shouldn’t be culled no matter what size they are. We are in the sharks’ habitation and there are other procedures to prevent shark attacks.…

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, chairman and adjudicator. The topic for our debate tonight is that we should adopt a productive shark culling policy and we, as the affirmative team believe that we benefit from such a policy. We define this topic as the Australian government should adopt a productive and beneficial shark culling program, which is the capture, monitor and occasionally the killing of sharks within vicinity of the beaches that place humans in risk and as the affirmative team we fully support the idea. Tonight as the first speaker I will talk to you about the policies to the program including the culling of certain sharks. Our second speaker Nick, will speak to you about the Deadly increase inpopulations as well as a catch,…

Yes they live in these conditions, but that is the trade off for having such clean tanks and easy access to medical treatment. According to “5 Arguments For Keeping Captive Cetaceans,” “The temperature and salinity of the water is controlled. After decades of this, plunging these animals back into the oceans could likely be a death sentence.” The orcas are used to the clean regulated water of their tanks, not the polluted water of the ocean; it might take months of slowly making the water less regulated to get the whales used to ocean water before they could be released. Seaworld is also expanding the orcas’ living condition - increasing the size of the habitats, and adding more enrichment programs for the…

At least 161 orcas have died in captivity at Seaworld due to the small enclosures and dangerous training. Seaworld is a marine resort that captives water related animals such as orcas, dolphins, and flamingos. They train the animals to put on shows and do tricks that they would never naturally do. Tilikum, a 22 foot, 12,500 pound orca, was captured in November of 1983 when he was just a calf. Trainer Keltie Byrne was pulled to the bottom of a tank by Tilikum and drowned.…

In 2013 the documentary “Blackfish” premiered at the Sundance festival, but was later spread to a larger community with the help of CNN. The film “Blackfish” questions the treatment and imprisonment of Orca Whales and proposes the idea that being held in small enclosures is detrimental to the health of these intelligent beings. After the documentary aired, “Seaworld’s profits dropped 84%” (Rhodan), but there are some visitors who still choose to attend the amusement park. What is the amoral history behind Seaworld? Are Seaworld visitors an accomplice to the abuse of Orca Whales?…

Orcas swim up to one-hundred miles a day in the wild, but in captivity they have to swim the circumference of the tank 1,900 times just to equal that. Life in a cramped tank also leads to stress, boredom, and depression. These traits can cause orcas to demonstrate repetitive harmful behavior, such as banging their head on landing platforms. The tanks weren’t just a bad fit for orcas at Sealand; they’re also a bad fit for orcas at SeaWorld. “Orcas in captivity gnaw at iron bars and concrete from stress, anxiety, and boredom, sometimes breaking their teeth and resulting in painful dental drilling without anesthesia.”…

Killers whales are unable to hunt and obtain water from their prey, so SeaWorld gives them gelatin, that is not natural for them, in an attempt to keep them hydrated. “As a result, animals imprisoned by SeaWorld often die prematurely from stress and other captivity-related causes.” (Matthies).…

Describing the process of capturing them and how the mother and the other orcas stayed near the boat shows that these people working for SeaWorld were inhumane leading the audience to feel the need to be against them. While describing this process, Garrett used words like “bombs and torches” to have a negative connotation. Using the word bomb and orcas in the same sentence may anger a person but they also said that it was thrown near not on or at any orcas. A SeaWorld employee explains how the whales live longer in this environment, “In the wild living to be thirty five mid-thirties.
