Dear Dr. Massimo,

At the beginning of the semester, I had many goals and objectives for this class. I wanted to become a more sophisticated reader that could critically analyze any piece of writing. I also wanted to be a more flexible writer. Previous to taking this course, I used to be comfortable writing in only one style, and if I was forced to adopt another style I would usually have a poor outcome. Last but not least, I wanted to have a clear, working knowledge of the MLA style since it was my first time ever being exposed to it.

I believe that I have successfully achieved these goals. Each assignment required us to write in a different style and conventions. For example,

I think this is really important because for a writer to compose a successful paper he or she must be interested and indulged in their topic. We were required to choose a controversial topic, introduce both sides of an argument and then present our opinion. I chose my topic to be the legalization of assisted suicide. The only downfall of this argumentative assignment was that it was the most time-consuming out of the three since we had to conduct heavy research. While other assignments took an average of two days, this one took a week until I felt confident enough to start writing. This is due to the fact that I wanted to have a general idea about the subject before making any claims. The final assignment was the rhetorical analysis, where we had to analyze a piece of writing. In order to break down the text, we had to use our critical reading skills. The article that you chose, The toxic truth about sugar, was actually very informative. I found this assignment to be the hardest. Some challenges I faced included trying to find the persuasive techniques and the right tone. Also, finding the logical appeal was …show more content…
I used to think that revision and proofreading were the same thing. However, what I later discovered is that proofreading is just correcting commas and spelling. While revision is reconsidering the arguments made as well as the evidence. That is why writing is a process because it cannot be done in one step. Writers must go through a process to produce a decent paper.

In conclusion, I had a very positive experience with this class. I believe that I learned a lot from this course such as the writing strategies that I was not aware of previously. I feel that I can now express my ideas far more effectively. There is always room for improvement. That is why I will continue working on myself. I would like to thank you. All your lectures and remarks made me turned me into a more confident writer.

I found the first essay assignment challenging because it was my first time to write an evidence-based argument essay and I wasn’t sure I used sufficient evidence to make a strong argument. Most of my writing thus far has been rather expressive writing based on my experience, so it took a while to complete the first draft of the portfolio essay. I kept asking myself whether I selected evidence correctly based on my chosen stance, however, the valuable lesson I learned from this essay is that I can argue anything as long as I have evidence. That is very powerful, but it is difficult to achieve because not all evidence can be proven easily.…

The most useful and interesting things that I have learned in this course are how to utilize the writing resources, read different types of literature and preparatory tips for CAHSEE. The writing resources are very informative, which help students to follow instructions—such as MLA format or citation guidelines. In addition, students are introduced to many wonderful literary works: short stories, novels, poems, and timeless plays of Shakespeare. Reading contributes greatly to our understanding of the writing itself and the literary devices used in it. Lastly, the tips for CAHSEE are actually practical since students can apply them to perform well, without having to struggle with long passages and…

What was frustrating and difficult about writing for this course was how loose and vague the prompts were. Almost all the essays I had to write in high school had specific prompts. Furthermore, almost every paper was on a piece of literature. I had a specific structure that I would use, that I was taught in middle school, that seemed to work. However, the structure did not seem to work here because this was one of my first times writing whole papers about something other than literature.…

I began this course with an open mind, a bit of anxiety, and a clean sheet of paper. I was unsure of what I would learn or what my writing style would develop into. While I was excited to write, I was unsure of the formalities of the English language and the structure of academic writing. Eight weeks later, I have filled multiple pages of paper with ideas, words, and sentences. More importantly, I spent multiple hours dissecting, editing, and re-writing those ideas, words, and sentences in an organized and mature manner.…

When I first signed up for the class I expected the structure and content to be like any other typical general education class, however, I was wrong. I came into the class with an abundant amount of personal goals to increase my writing and general English skills and I received far more than I could have asked for. English has always been a troubling subject for me to pick up on and understand in high school so my expectations were bleak. However, I am happy that I was wrong because my skills have been refined way more than I expected specifically development in content analysis, and writing style.
