The first organization for gay rights was founded by a man named Henry Gerber in Chicago, Illinois. Unfortunately, due to the pressure this organization was put under it was forced to shut down. In 1948, many psychiatrists still believed that to be gay was to have some form of a mental sickness. Alternatively, a man named Alfred Kinsey, who was a Biologist at the time, wrote and published a book called, “Sexual Behavior in the Human Male.” This book explained that not only was homosexuality not any form of psychiatric illness, but almost 40 % of men had partaken of at least one form of homosexual activity in their lifetime. In November of 1950, the first national gay rights organization was founded by Harry Hay. This organization made it their goal to change the minds of the conservative citizens to be more open to gay people. It would be one month until Congress proposed that gay people were “perverts” and to employ them was detrimental to a company. Many years after this proposition, gays and lesbians all over the nation were let go from their places of employment due to their “mental illness”. Two years later in April of 1952, President Dwight Eisenhower presented Executive Order 10450. This proposed that gay people were a risk to the companies that they worked for and were categorized with alcoholics and neurotic individuals.
