Will Humans Ever Live On Mars?

Global warming. Nuclear warfare. Donald Trump. These are some of the problems we face in today’s society. In order for the human race to ensure its survival from such threats, it is imperative that humans expand beyond earth and into space. If earth were to be destroyed, the human race would continue to exist on another planet. Many scientists believe mars would be a suitable planet to begin colonizing (SpaceX). Mars has ice underneath its soil, which translates into water. Its land is solid, making it easy to establish buildings, and its distance from earth is the second shortest of any major planet. However, mars is completely uninhabitable. Its lack of atmosphere, as well as the temperature, gravity, dust

By doing so, humans would not have to live on mars in the first place. Lastly, why would anyone want to volunteer to go and colonize mars? It is impossible and irrational for humans to live on mars.

Humans will never live on mars because the planet is completely uninhabitable. Even though the planet has a source of water, and solid land to establish a human civilization, the planet lacks an atmosphere, similar to that of earth. The lack of atmosphere leaves mars vulnerable to space debris as well solar radiation. As a result, settlers cannot safely travel outside without proper equipment, or else putting themselves at risk to long term chronic diseases such as cancer and permanent eye damage, that is, if the temperature does not kill them first. The average temperature on mars is -60 degrees celsius. During the winter it can plummet to -125 degrees celsius (Sharp). In addition to the climate, mars consistently has planet wide dust storms that can last for days on end, on rare occasions, even weeks (Nasa). With only solar power as their only source of energy, settlers would find it impossible to survive. Furthermore, the soil on mars is toxic, making it completely impossible to grow anything.

The general argument made by author Laurie Vasquez in her work, Could Human Actually Live on Mars? is quite simply that people have the ability to make it to the moon, they just need the materials, technology, and people to help them achieve that goal. More specifically, Vasquez argues that NASA has the technology to achieve the dream of landing on Mars. They mainly have to learn how to overcome the challenges of going to the red planet. She writes that, “‘We’ve had the technology since we went to the moon,’ Petranek says. … the journal Scientific Reports found that even after six months, Mars astronauts would experience brain inflammation and neuron damage.…

It will be very difficult to colonized the red planet, because of its weather conditions. Mars have a very thin atmosphere that make it almost unsuitable to support human life (Sharp). The red planet has a much lighter gravity system than the Earth and its Oxygen level are very low (Sharp). Therefore, it would be almost impossible for humans to survive on Mars without using a lot of technology to provide them with the needed resources. One of the major problem on Mars is the atmosphere’s composition, because it is composed of 95.2 percent of Carbon Dioxide, while on Earth there is only 0.4 percent of Carbon Dioxide (Sharp). Mars is a very small planet, half the diameter of the Earth, this will reduce the amount space needed for each human and…

When considering colonizing another planet, everyone should be aware of what the consequences of living on said planet can possibly be. Mars seems to be a worrisome option. For instance, it is possible that the long-term effects of living on Mars would include bone decalcification and loss of muscle tone. Such health problems are connected to the fact that Mars' surface gravity is drastically different from Earth's, with it being 3.7 m/s². If the similarities in surface gravity between Earth and Venus are taken into consideration, we can prevent the problems associated with weightlessness that we could expect from long-term living on Mars.…

However, the Earth and Mars both have rich supplies of oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, and carbon; Mars has these elements in the forms of nitrogen gas, carbon dioxide gas, and ice. What is infinitely more vital, however, is whether we would be able to transform these resources in such a way that we would then be able to actually inhabit Mars. There is an answer to this question, albeit untested. Using the process of a controlled global warming through a method called outgassing (Terrestrial), we would be able to terraform the planet to a point that biological life could thrive without the constant need for technology (Terrestrial). This process could make Mars very similar to the Earth in terms of its overall atmosphere, climate, and environment.…
