I’ve been teachin’ meself since I was five, and I’m 18, thats 20 years of self education. I know all I need, no schoolin’ or teachers could teach me nothing important.” If this boy is correct, why are schools needed if we can educate ourselves, and spend our time, and money on more important things. Countless students and teachers go to school every day and work very hard to meet what is asked of each of them. Teachers work more than 40 hours a week, especially when there are events going on throughout the school year. Students go to class to earn an “A,” not to learn what the teacher is teaching the class due to the fact that students were taught to contently earn a letter grade in that class. However, teachers are not at fault either because the school board and administrators give the teachers a timeline of all the curriculum the students must learn to a certain point in time of each marking period. In “Against School” by John Taylor Gatto, he describes how numerous students and teachers go to school and they are just dullness is so…

The New York City Teacher of the Year, John Gatto, argues in “Against School- How public education cripples our kids today, and why” that the school system is taking advantage of the students mind. Gatto states that not everyone has to go to school in order to be successful, but the school system is enforcing that everyone must go to school. Education can be accomplished anywhere, according to Gatto, but schooling is tearing down peoples ability to think, also “dumbing down” society. John Gatto argues in “Against School-…

Creativity is a word that is heard throughout our time in school, however as you get older the word becomes less important because it has nothing to do with your “essential” subjects, or so some think. In the video we were asked to watch I could not help but agree on everything Sir Ken Robinson had to say. His ideas and way of thinking are remarkable and I found myself hanging on to every word and going back to listen to certain parts of the video again. I do, in fact, believe schools kill creativity, Robinson talks about how we as people do not grow into creativity, we grow out of it, or are better yet educated out of it. During elementary school I remember attending a music and art class every other day of the week and it was a chance for all of the students to be creative.…
