Marching Band is a Sport You would probably consider weightlifting a sport, right? Well, imagine lifting 35 pounds continuously for 15 minutes, while moving. Marching band is competitive, physically exerting, and has a certain set of rules. They have intense practices and do conditioning. Marching band should be considered a sport. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the definition of sport is “a contest or game in which people do certain physical activities according to a specific set of rules and compete against each other”. In marching band, they have many competitions from the beginning of the school year to the end of the fall (omahacentralregister.com). There are judges that are on the field critiquing your every move and then judges also watch from the sidelines to judge your sound and quality. You have to memorize music and movements which is a strain on mental and physical fitness. So if you go by the dictionary, marching band is a sport. …show more content…
In order to be good at marching band, you have to be able to move to the tempo, which can get as fast as 120 beats per minute (musicedmagic.com). Speed walking requires this same capability. You have to lift anywhere from 10-40 pounds for the entire performance (omahacentralregister.com). Weightlifting requires you to lift heavy weights over a shorter period of time. The marching show is made into multiple drills that are required to be known. Football has similar drills or plays they are required to know. Breathing is also very important not only in marching band, but in swimming too. The correct breathing techniques allow endurance and the ability to play. Marching band includes everything a “real” sport is made
