Death Penalty Ineffective

Superior Essays
The death penalty is one of the most debated topics in our current time. Many people and politicians believe that the death penalty is “wasteful, it’s ineffective, it doesn’t work to reduce violent crime” (O’Malley). “Former Attorney General Eric Holder says that he does not support the death penalty because he realizes that men and women are the ones who decide who dies and who lives and people make mistakes” (O’Malley). Now on the other hand people like myself feel that it is an effective method of dealing these with these immoral criminals and can be used as a deterrent if we started using it more often and for other types of crimes. In this essay I am going to show you why we should use the death penalty more often; almost like Gov. Perry …show more content…
If we also started executing people that have been to prison, especial federal prison on multiple occasions, then that too will a deterrent for repeat criminals to not want to commit a crime again. The reason this would reduce crime is because criminals would realize that if they go to jail one more time than they will be executed, this would cause them to be hesitant when thinking about committing another crime. Let’s look at eastern countries like Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and even China they use the death penalty all the time there and that causes fear in people to not want to commit crimes. Now you can try arguing that places like Canada don’t have executions but lower crime rates, but Canada allows marijuana for recreational use, so how strict is the enforcement over there. And if the enforcement is strict over there, how strict is it? Here in the US we are sort of stuck on the fine line that prevents of from being able to say that we use it enough to cause a sense of fear. Now I only recommend this if the individual commits certain crimes like murder or something as serious as murder; I don’t want a person who committed a DUI to be executed because of his or her …show more content…
Well as stated earlier death row inmate’s cost more than the average inmate because of how our system tries everything possible to insure that we execute the right person, but all these trials, hearings, and retrials cost money but thanks to the generous taxpayers the inmate is charged nothing. I feel that the family of the prisoner should be charged all the expensive if they want to have all these extra trials; “but legally the state has to foot the bill”(DuBose). Another thing is everyone who is about to face the death penalty is allowed another trial right before the execution is about to happen. This gives the defendants some time to organize a case and fight to say whether or not the person even did the crime and or whether or not the person really deserves the death penalty. If we were to eliminate some of these processes then we could get the executions over and done with and there would be a smaller cost to pay but that would compromise the effectiveness of the state in insuring that the right person gets the proper punishment or verdict. So how could we speed this up; well we are in the modern era and it is time our court system was upgraded to be faster and more accurate. We could start using DNA testing for more if not every trial and that would help insure a correct sentencing is given to the right person and I’m sure we could also figure out another test

The death penalty has been a topic of contention since it was introduced among humankind. The two sides of this issue are either for or against it. There are many solid points between the two disagreeing parties that need to be explored to make an informed decision on which side you would choose to support. Two essays I will draw from in this writing are written by Edward Koch, who is for, and David Bruck, who is against it. Both parties have made excellent points in their writings and will be great avenues to explore while making your decision.…

The morality of the death penalty has long been, and still is a controversial topic in the United States. People have been debating for centuries whether or not this form of punishment should exist. Those supporting it have claimed that the death penalty acts as a deterrent of future crimes. On the other hand, those against it have disproved this claim. Studies show that capital punishment should not be used in the United States, since it does not act as a deterrent, certain groups are more likely to be sentenced to death, and it does not offer closure for families.…

This article, written for Time Magazine, gave people a better idea of what was going on with the death penalty and understand why the era of capital punishment is coming to an end. The organization of “The Death of the Death Penalty” was confusing and sometimes I didn’t quite understand what was being talked about. The essay’s argument, however, is constructed logically by giving the reader facts and statistics. Von Drehle argues that the capital punishment system has failed and causes our government to spend millions of dollars on…

Haag, a sociologist, wrote an extensive explanation on why the death penalty would help deter criminals from committing crimes. He has stated that the death penalty may be the only way to keep some people from committing crimes. He has said that this will help reduce the number of victims to crimes such as murder and rape. Haag also feels that if the punishments for a crime is raised then the desire to commit a crime is quickly diminished. I agree with Haag.…

The death penalty continues to be a hot topic of debate around the United States. There are those who debate whether the death penalty should be abolished and there are those who affirm or agree with the death penalty. There are those who say it is morally wrong to have the death penalty imposed while others say “an eye for an eye.” While these may be two of the biggest arguments against the death penalty there are also ones that state that the death penalty does not deter criminals from committing the same crime while several other studies show that it is a suitable deterrence for crime. Several states have already abolished the death penalty.…

‘Killing people is wrong’, a statement everyone can stand behind, however, in some arguments, would depend on who did the killing (Koch 483). The death penalty has been under the watchful eye of the United States population for some time now, and has developed an audience on both sides of the argument. Many believe the death penalty is morally wrong, alluding to scriptures from the Bible. Others would argue the death penalty is a way of justice for the murderers and ultimately for the victims. The light shed from opposing views could help reach a resolve and put the issue at rest, however, in the meantime, one must pull from both sides to decide for themselves.…

In this paper I will give you facts from both sides of the death penalty. The death penalty is a very controversial subject. Some people believe that it is wrong to kill a man ever and some believe that if a person kills that they should be killed as well. The arguments that we will see are whether the value of life is enough to not execute a convicted person, if the reason the person is being kills is for vengeance or justice and whether the crime decreases or stays the same if the death penalty is in place.…

    Death Penalty In Texas

Keeping an adult inmate in prison for life costs about $1 million (although there is considerable variance here). Prosecuting a death penalty case from trial to exhaustion of all appeals and execution costs typically $5 million, as the government is paying the costs for both sides in the case. An appeals process is especially critical in capital cases, as there is no way to go back and make an executed prisoner whole again. With the possible exception of Texas, the death penalty is seldom used.…

In North Carolina, a study performed found that there would be a $2 million difference between a death sentence and a life without parole sentence. It has been found that a death penalty case costs about $3 million, which is three times the cost of 40 years imprisonment of an inmate (Cuomo, 1956). I think that the death penalty should be abolished, but should be replaced with a punishment that has a similar effect but is less expensive. True life imprisonment seems more effective than the capital punishment. To most inmates, the thought of spending the rest of their lives behind bars only to die in a cell is worse than a quick death by lethal injection.…

Data is unfortunately incomplete or difficult to comb through thoroughly to obtain an exact amount spent, but it appears that the expenses start to occur during the trial phase of capital litigation. Results for this are because of longer pre-trial periods, a longer and more intensive voir die process, longer trials, more time spent by attorneys preparing cases, more investigative and expert services, and an expensive penalty phase trial that does not occur at all in non-death penalty cases (Steiker and Steiker 405). Back in 2009 there were at least eleven state legislatures who considered bills to abolish the death penalty, all concerns were pointing at cost. Over time New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Illinois, and Connecticut have abolished the death penalty, and once again the high cost of maintaining a properly functioning death penalty system was the reason for the abolishment. National studies suggest that each additional capital trail causes an increase in county spending of more than two million dollar and theses costs are borne primarily by increasing taxes.…

This is needed because if America let criminals just serve jail time they can get back into society and repeat their crimes. “The Death Penalty Information Center reports that in 2011, the murder rate was 18 percent higher in states without the death penalty” (Issitt). This proves that the death penalty helps prevent serious crimes. If America would have death penalty for serious crimes it will help prevent repeat offenders and also prevent criminals from committing crimes in the first place. This shows the people of America should be very conducive of the death penalty with a stat like this.…

There are large amounts of supporters for both sides on this issue. People for capital punishment would argue that it serves as deterrence and also as retribution. If people are certain that they will be caught then they are less likely to engage in criminal activity. One of the very first deterrence studies looked at the states that used capital punishment and states that did not have the death penalty (Akers et al, 2017). The studies found that having the death penalty did not decrease the homicide rate which means that the severity did not affect whether or not individuals…
