1 February 2015 The Legal Drinking Age Persuasive Essay The legal drinking age in countries has been a well discussed topic. Many people have tried to lower the minimum age in the United States. In the U.S. the standard is 21 years of age. There are many reasons that show why the legal drinking age is 21 years of age. Plus evidence that it should not be changed or lowered. The effect drinking has on teen accident rate is huge. Undergraduates drinking is very unsafe. “They endanger and sometimes kill their fellow students[...]They sexually assault their female companions (approximately 100,000 incidents annually). They get into fights with other young undergrads (some 700,000 assaults annually)”(Main). When undergraduates in college binge drink there are many incidents where people are hurt, sexually assaulted, and killed. Binge drinking is a major problem and lowering the drinking age would just increase that problem. The drinking does not start in college for most. “ A third of our youth taste their first drink before the age of 13 and have drinking patterns as early as 8th to 10th grade”(Main). The drinking starts when they are younger and when they get exposed to it more in college they fall into binge drinking patterns. Young who are exposed to alcohol frequently around the home are more likely to start drinking at a younger …show more content…
It is not worth the unnecessary deaths from alcohol related accidents. What is the point of giving them the freedom to drink when that will just increase deaths and injuries. People argue that if you can get married at 18 and not drink at your own wedding is not right. People have the right to decide to be married but that is different from drinking a substance that can kill a person if not consumed with
