Practice may not take place if there is no coach present. If all rules are not followed during a cheer season, there can turn out to have some serious consequences. Cheerleaders in their highschool years will exhibit dissatisfaction with their body and develop an eating disorder. A cheerleader needs to be physically fit to have good endurance to perform a great routine. Cheerleaders do not have to be skinny. These health risks also can be affected by injury. An average number of injuries in cheerleaders per year is 28.8%. Injuries occur all the time during sports. Most injuries are caused by improper skills and lack of a good attitude. Nicole Waters states in an article called What Goes Up Must Come Down, “Injury prevention can be achieved by proper warm up, balance and strengthening exercises.” This means that if a team stays focused and follow the rules as individuals and as a team while participating in a sport, less injuries will occur. Commitment is a big deal in the competition world because training can take many hours a week. Routines for a competition can range from sixty seconds to about two minutes and thirty seconds. Learning and training just for a sixty second routine could take hours of practice. Just training for a cheer squad in general can add up to many hours a week. “All Star” is a name used for cheer teams in competition that are not associated with a school.
