“Brace face”, “You are ugly”, “Ugly duckling”, “You are fat”, “You are stupid”,” You are too thin”, “Weirdo”. These are just some of the comments that primary or high school learners come across when being bullied. Some of the above mentioned comments are from personal experiences I’ve had growing up. I was between the ages of 11-13 when I was bullied in Primary school. The first reason is, my front teeth used to stick out due to an underdeveloped jaw. Secondly, I had gone back to mainstream school after being in remedial school for 3 years .As my home language was German, I struggled to learn English at this level and so I went for extra lessons to learn the language. To the other learners I was stupid because I came from a “stupid” school. …show more content…
Some solutions include: Standing up against bullies because these learners are often looking for approval and an audience, talk to learners in your class about bullying, build a relationship with learners in your class in order for it to be so strong that if they get bullied they will come straight to you, invite anti-bullying campaigns to the school to teach learners about bullying and what to do if you are getting bullied, speak to parents about bullying and how to notice different behaviors in their children, let learners take part in an anti-bullying poster contest. When it comes to your attention that bullying is happening, you should take action immediately by talking to the learner that is bullying. You must try find the reason for why the child is bullying other children because often it is the case that there is problems at home such as lack of attention, physical abuse, emotional abuse, verbal abuse, sexual abuse, lack of parental presence and so forth. You should get the parents of the bully and the target involved and have follow up meetings to see if things are getting better. It is also important that you do work with the bully as he/she may he experiencing issues no one is aware of. If your class it would be advisable to have set rules, reward positive behavior, have parent meetings so that parents are always informed, have an open communication with your class about bullying. As a teacher you must always keep a look out for warning signs, and hot spot areas in the school where bullying may occur for example in bathrooms and behind classrooms. It is also no use just punishing the bully and expecting that things will change. As a teacher you need to continuously work with both the target and the bully because if you just ignore the “bullying” and you think it is sorted after the punishment,
