In today’s society, many students’ lives revolve around active sports and recreation. While a few districts might say that these activities are a major distraction to students and are a budget killer; various studies show that this is good for students both mentally and physically. Therefore, schools should keep sports in their extracurricular plans because students that play school sports focus more in class, they are stress-relievers, and they build character and teamworking skills. It has been proven that students who are physically active pay more attention in class. In Tim O’Shei’s article he says, “According to a 2013 report from a professor at the Institute of Medicine, kids that are physically active have more focus, are better problem solvers, and score higher on tests” (12). O’Shei goes on to say that a 2012 report by the Datalys Center found that kids that are active have higher scores in English and Math (O’Shei 13).
