From many points of perspective, the word smoking means different things to different people. Some might think smoking means relaxation, while others might think it means disease and harm. Cigarettes have been invented for over a century. Since then, many people have started to smoke, which has led to many issues that the world faces today. Smoking is a serious issue that needs the attention of all American citizens. Even though the United States cannot control what others countries think about this issue, they can definitely set an example for others to follow. Smoking has caused issues for the environment, for the smokers themselves, and for other people around them. By smoking, smokers are taking away the rights of others. When a cigarette is lit, the toxic chemicals are released into the air, which causes the air to be polluted. No matter how many cigarettes are lit by someone, the air is still polluted because there are millions of people who smoke in the United States. Many cigarette butts and ashes do not always go in the trashcan. They mainly end up on the ground in streets, rivers, woods, and grass. This problem is not only about dealing with litter but with the well-being of the people and animals. When people toss their cigarettes out without checking to make sure they are burned out completely, it can lead to fires. Certain chemicals can come in contact with cigarette butts, which can cause a huge fire that quickly burns down houses and forests. The relentless fires take away the warm homes of both humans and animals. In order to prevent this horrible action, smokers have to stop smoking, so it will not harm the environment any …show more content…
Second hand smoke means excess smoke from cigarettes that causes damage to other people. The effect of second hand smoke is the worst. It is worse than being the smoker. "Lighting a cigarette creates over 4,000 harmful chemicals with hazardous adverse effects on almost every organ in the body"(Al-Sayed 1). These hazardous chemicals are being spread into the air and inhaled by others, which is harmful for the body. When a pregnant woman inhales the smoke, it not only hurts her but also her baby. "The use of smokeless tobacco products in pregnant women results in increased risk of low birth weight, premature birth, stillbirth and preeclampsia" (Thorac J 1) The baby can be born prematurely, and could have other serious health problems and disorders. "Passive smoking may have harmful effects particularly in children compared with adults because children’s respiratory and immune systems are not fully developed"(Al-Sayed 2). Children 's immune systems are not strong enough to defend against second hand smoke, which can easily infect them. People who have asthma will also be in a dangerous situation when they walk by a person who is smoking a cigarette in a public place. On one hand, the smokers might not know the victims have asthma and walk pass by them; this can cause an asthma attack which it might even lead to the victim 's death.
