Most parents have their children (pre-teenagers and teenagers) do some chores around the house. Chores can be throwing the trash out, vacuuming, washing dishes, making beds, dusting, or maybe even refilling the dog’s food bowl. The incentive to get children to do these chores is an allowance, or in other words money. This is a bad incentive because children should not be getting “paid” to help maintain their home clean. Do their parents get an allowance for sweeping the floor, doing laundry, cooking dinner, or cleaning the bathroom? Children should do these chores regardless. Adults don’t get an allowance when keeping their home clean, why should children?
