The Fox News “Media Buzz” article, Doggedness and Defiance: How Trump Won, by Howard Kurtz asserts that, “Trump's defiance enabled him to pull off a ‘miracle’” Hillary Rodham Clinton in the 2016 presidential election. The article summarizes some of the major scandals and events involving Donald J. Trump, during his 2016 presidential campaign. It then draws the conclusion that Trump’s defiance is what enabled him to overcome the odds and be elected president. The article uses evidence which conflicts with how our political system works, by misrepresenting how miraculous and unexpected Trump’s victory was and inaccurately defending the claim that his defiance enabled his victory.

Kurtz in the article claims that, “Trump was a genuine phenomenon, an outsider who used gut instincts, media mastery and a blunt, often divisive message to outfox an often hostile press corps.”, however he argue through multiple examples that this was often a detriment to him, as it made his campaign more focused on scandals then issues. Neither of these is entirely true. Many major news sources at least try to appear to be “unbiased” which leads to them framing stories from a variety of different angles which is the only way in which that political scientist believe that they can influence people on “hot-button” issue. (Class 14: Media) And while large portions of the media landscape were hostile to Trump, large portions were also hostile to Clinton. According to a Harvard study, on Online Media and the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election, among the top 100 most linked to stories all the Clinton focused ones were negative. The study also shows that coverage of Clinton more frequently referenced her scandals than her views on issues, while it referenced Trumps views on issues than his scandals.
