Raising Minimum Wage
Working a minimum wage job can often feel hopeless; depending on one’s living situation, every dollar spent is practically essential for his or her daily life to meet a suitable living condition. When viewed from an employer’s perspective, the employer may seem as though he or she would be willing to pay the workers less if it was not against the law. The job itself could be essential to a company. However, without a worthwhile salary workers can have their morale diminished. In today’s society, citizens in the working class and lower class can be working full time hours at a minimum wage job making only $7.25 per hour, placing the workers below the poverty line. By increasing the national minimum wage to at least $10.10, the economy can be boosted and lift thousands of workers out of poverty.

One of the biggest arguments that critics present in opposition of minimum wage is that it leads to job loss in large and small businesses. The Congressional Budget Office predicted that if the minimum wage were raised to $10.10, then employment would be reduced by approximately 500,000 workers (Brunnermeier, Markus and Goldin 9). While it may be true that employment can be reduced in some jobs, a payroll company called Paychex surveyed 350,000 small businesses and found the exact opposite. Its analysis showed that in Washington, the state with the highest minimum wage at $9.32 had the largest annual job growth in the nation. San Francisco, the city with the highest minimum wage at $10.34, also had the highest percentage of annual job growth in a metropolitan area (Meyerson).
