Persuasive Essay: Prayer Should Be Allowed In School

Improved Essays
Let Us Pray Every day students are required to pray as a class by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance at the beginning of every school day. It is also notorious for students to independently pray to God to do well on tests, do well in sports, and for the bravery to stand up for themselves. Therefore to these examples, it is accessible that prayer is already in the schools, but should it be? I believe prayer should be allowed in school because it does not violate the First Amendment. Most people believe religious practices should be offered in school. It would provide enrichment for the students whose parents do not believe in religion and in turn, does not teach their children religious beliefs. A survey noted, “seventy-nine percent of Americans think a class explaining the world's major religions should be offered in high school, eleven percent think it should be required” (Schroeder). Having a class would help the students better comprehend the different religions of their associates and in turn be more respectful to other religions. As long as the class was only offered and not enforced, then the religion would not be forced upon the students.

How would you feel if you were told that you couldn’t read something because others your age weren’t mature enough to read it? You’d be upset, right? The school board wants to do something similar, they want to ban books that “aren’t suitable” for young readers, just because they think that most middle schoolers aren’t mature enough to read about sensitive subjects. I believe that books with sensitive topics should not be banned from public school libraries, because it should be up to the students’ parents what they are and aren’t allowed to read, kids should be permitted to learn about specific topics beyond the classroom, and lastly, the school board shouldn’t be the ones deciding whether young students are mature enough to read about certain issues.…

Having prayers in schools has been a subject to discussion as there are some people who think having prayer in schools is against the constitution. As children are too young to distinguish right and wrong, and they have no idea about religion, exposing them to religious matters and prayer is controversial. One of the articles that favors having prayer in schools is “We Need More Prayer” that is written by Armstrong Williams. Also, one of the articles that discusses against having prayer in schools is “How Can School Prayer Possibly Hurt? Here’s How,” written by USA Today.…

In the years following the decision in the Engel v. Vitale case religion has been erased from our school systems. Although the majority feels there should be a time for personal prayer or meditation, no such allowance has come to fruition. I feel as though each person should be able to express their own beliefs in the manner they choose wherever they choose. I believe that if we were to allow the children of America to sit quietly for a moment and prayer in their own distinct way it would bring about a more open and tolerant viewpoint on one another’s…

A New York State law created states all public schools were to open each day with the Pledge of Allegiance and a nondenominational prayer in which the students acknowledged their dependence upon God. Engel vs. Vitale was a case brought to the attention of the Supreme Court by ten concerned parents by minors who attended a public school in New York City. At the beginning of a school day lesson the following prayer, consisting of 22 words, ‘Almighty God, we acknowledge our dependence upon Thee, and we beg Thy blessings upon us, our parents, our teachers and our country. Amen.’, was recited due to the approval of the New York state board of regents (state board of education) in 1951.…

It has been reinforced in class and again in Prothero’s book, religion and the right to worship is our inalienable right that no one should be allowed to take away. Teaching religion in schools is not about having kids choose a faith to believe in by telling them that one religion is superior to another. Instead, it can and should culturally enrich them and open their minds to other religious teachings; and at the same time they can have conviction in their choice to believe or not believe in any one faith. Learning the foundation and concepts that make their religion unique can give each person a greater understanding and appreciation for their own religion. By doing this I believe we then empower them to realize that there are many other different perspectives than just their own, learning about this diversity can in Prothero’s words, make for an effective citizen (Prothero…

Understanding other peoples perspective, and traditions help you understand their character better. Taking classes like psychology or religion, for me especially, helped my understand the human mind better, and appreciate people for their faults, and it just opens a new understanding as a whole. I think everyone should be required to take a religion class or an ethics class, because you can 't be successful in the world if you 're ignorant to world culture. Understanding why people think the way they do helps the community become more of a community, and i think we would have less problems in the world if we become more…

“Even the most basic type of prayer is offensive to those who don’t want to pray. And meanwhile, some common prayers might be rejected by devout Christians as weak tea” (Tribune News Service). If students don't want to practice a basic type of religion or any other religion other than theirs they should have the choice to practice their one. Many parents wouldn't like this idea. There should be a religion class but each person should get to pick their religion and practice it. Finally, students should focus more on reading and writing and keep the different types of religon in the social studies…

Despite the new outburst of year-round schooling across the nation, I have the firm belief that we should retain the traditional system. Most schools who have switched to the year round calendar switched back to the traditional one because the anticipated instructional advantages haven’t materialized. In some cases, it even results in a drop of one to two percentile points in national rank for reading, math, and language scores, compared to a traditional calendar. It is not a good idea to keep making this change.…

Because the county already does most of the work. 1st if the school boards would be removed then the county would have to decide the school's finances, school unions, school closings and learning materials. 2nd schools would have more options because the countries should have the same budget for each school so they could not give a school more or less money.…

It is a fact, the majority religion in the United States is some form of Christianity. If prayer were to become allowed in schools, under the terms that all religions are allowed equal time, you cannot expect this majority to cater to the minority. Some of these Christians hold extremely harmful, radical views on the topic of religion. They are selfish and care little for others that lie outside their opinions. Imagine what would happen if one of these people were to become principal in one of these schools.…

Land of the “Free” Memorizing the Pledge of Allegiance is a flashback to the kindergarten days. Not knowing what the pledge was or what it stood for, but having to stand each morning, place our right hand over our heart, and monotonously recite the pledge like robots. However, engraving the pledge into these young minds goes against many religions that do not believe in a God. Having them say the pledge either forces them to recognize that there is a God or protest against the pledge. For those that do not believe in God, the alteration of the pledge is a must, in order to maintain a neutral religious government in the land of the free.…

Public school administration wants students to feel safe at school, but what if the only way for students to feel safe is for them to pray? You can not just openly take away something that makes children feel safe. Many issues going on now in public school are the rising of shootings and drug and alcohol use. School prayer could help defeat these issues because it can help with the tolerance and make students realize you do not need to be a part of drug and/or alcohol use to be accepted or “popular.” It can also build their mortality to make the right decisions to they do not get peer pressured into the consumption of drug and/or alcohol use.…

One’s faith is dictated by believing in God but in some cases like the Christians have, believing that Christ revealed God through the Catholic Church and the body of Christ is united in the Holy Spirit. The word “believing” in the statement above means that our God wants us to partake in His divine life. Faith is one of the most evident replies we can give to God as a sign that we are his disciples and accept Him as our one and only Lord and Saviour. It is when we knock in his door that he says, “Please come in!” Yes, I do think that we believers of God must possess a certain type of dedication that we must change in order for us to live by His words and follow Him.…
