Zoos can be very good for animals. They can help save a species from extinction, and then the animals can repopulate. The zoos can also help to maintain the genetic diversity of a species. We should have zoos, because they repopulate species that are close to extinction and they maintain the genetic diversity of the species while treating all the animals humanely. Zoos breed species that are endangered or on the brink of extinction. The animals that are bred in captivity hardly get released back into the wild, but there are cases where it has worked. The red wolf in southeastern United States nearly went extinct, but zoos helped to save the population. “...such as the reintroduction of the red wolf in the Southeastern United States after it had nearly gone extinct. A species survival plan was used to bring the species back from the brink of extinction and its breeding program started with only 14 individuals (paragraph 11).” A zoo had a plan to breed a species and stop them from extinction, and if we got rid of zoos this wouldn't happen anymore. If there were no zoos left then breeding plans wouldn't happen, because people can’t …show more content…
With zoos breeding animals and being able to keep the genetic diversity they will be able to release more and more species back into the wild. “Zoos also say that they help maintain genetic diversity of species (paragraph 10).” If zoos continue to practice breeding more animals and they become better at maintaining genetic diversity more animals will be able to be released to their natural habitat, because they will be able to adapt to their new environment. There are roughly 500 survival plans being pursued right now, if the zoos end up getting shut down then roughly 500 species could possibly become extinct. By keeping zoos more and more species would thrive instead of becoming endangered or even

(Zimmer 145). Having these rare species of animals will attract more business to the zoo's. This reason is weak because a zoo might not be the best place for these animals to be, they should be kept in well maintained areas that are blocked off from human interactions, other than scientists of course. Although if the animals do attract more people to zoos then they will be able to make more money. Stewart Brand, from Long Now Foundation, points out “They will drag their parents to zoos to see the woolly mammoth and growing populations of captive-bred passenger pigeons, ivory-billed woodpeckers, Carolina parakeets, Eskimo curlews, great auks, Labrador ducks, and maybe even dodoes” (Brand 64).…

In these zoos, animals are treated cruelly and are killed for no reason, animals go through mental/psychological disorders, and lack the nutritious values that are only given to them in the wild. These reasons prove that zoos need to be shut down and these helpless animals deserve to live and thrive in the environment and habitat they come from. It is disturbing to think of how positive zoos are seen and how they are a popular attraction for people of all ages. Next time people go to a zoo, they should look closely at these animals and see the misery and depression in their…

Laura Reisse, coordinator with the species survival initiative said, “If you keep more diversity in the captive populations you keep more of those genes that you see in the wild populations. “ That makes no sense because if you leave wild animals in the wild, those animals will be able to breed and cross genes with natural animals that they were meant to coexist with. Keeping animals in the zoos limit the other animals they can interact with and it cause less genetic diversity. The Michael McCarthy, environmental editor, says that the opposing side also claims “Modern methods of keeping animals – in some cases—are much better than they were a few years ago” (4). Whether animal enclosures are better than a few years ago or not doesn’t matter.…

Zoos protect animals from these dangers and can help reintroduce endangered species back into the wild. “Quite simply without these efforts there would be fewer species alive today and ecosystems and the world as a whole would be poorer for it.” (Source D).
