School has traditionally always had summer vacation, it has had summer vacation since the late 1800s, thought to be for agrarian reason has now been debunked for years, and yet nothing has changed. Not only has the agrarian excuse been debunked, but it proves how outdated the idea of a summer vacation is, and has been a struggling time for struggling families. To help academically and economically the school day should be shortened, but the academic year should be extended to year round schooling to make up for the time that is lost in doing nothing.
The real reason why summer vacation exists, although true that in the agrarian calendar there would be a time for work in the summer, most of it was during spring. Schools in“New York city schools

Families that rely on the school meal programs don’t have convenient access to these programs, “only 40% of low-income families report being aware of locations for free summer meals and only 17% report their children having received meals” ("Summer Meals: Summer Meals Survey of Parents.").More than 30 million children in low income households rely on the free or reduced-price school meal program for their nutritional needs, but when the school year ends their lives can be thrown into disarray, however with the consistency of year round schooling, can help struggling homes keep their children fed more throughout the year rather than with schools with summer vacation. Previously said one in six families who need school lunch programs don’t receive it. From a parent struggling Jean C, of Scranton, Pennsylvania “ I usually do, in the summertime, go without eating” she goes on to how her kids will notice her not eating, an instance with her oldest child of 10 years old started to pick up on what was happening last summer “he would get so upset and say well if you’re not eating, I’m not gonna eat because that’s not fair” (Pyke Alan). Summer can be put to better use in year round schooling. According to the New York Times in New York, kids end up spending their summers in school anyway “ in New York, around 34,000 third [through] eighth graders are required to take summer

There are few traditions as weaved into the fabric of American youth as much as summer vacation. The origin of the 3-month leave of school goes back to the 1800s. Originally, it was based on the Agrarian calendar when children were needed as farm hands during harvest seasons. It is obvious that we live in a different era than the 1800s, most people see summer as a time to unravel from the school year and enjoy a little bit of leisure, but today this idea is fading. This generation is unique to those before it, because of the forces of globalization and technology academic competition is increasing at rates never before seen.…

During the summer break, students will usually forget a little of what they have learned over their school time. The 15 day break will allow the students to remember more and keep their regular schedule. Also, these 15 days can allow the students to get any late work complete or prepare for something in school coming in the next couple of days. Students going to school could enjoy it more, due to the shorter school period instead of going for the continuous 180 days of school. If students can remember more and enjoy school more, then the students should be able to become more educated.…

In a year-round school, it may be hard to maintain a job or travel with family in the one month of summer that the school gives students as their summer break. Laura Kelsey, author of “Should You Give Up Summer Vacation” claims, “year-round schools have roughly the same number of vacation days as traditional school calendars” (Kelsey 28). The traditional school calendar gives students 3 months of summer vacation, allowing students and teachers a much needed break. Some would argue that those summer months are the downfall to losing some of the material taught in the previous year of school. However, Kelsey also states, “Learning doesn’t have to stop for kids on long summer breaks.…

With more and more people switching to year round schools, more and more families are struggling to keep summer vacations and traditions alive. At the beginning of summer many families are getting ready for vacations, camping, and more, but if there is year round schools, then they will have to put off family traditions and vacations they have been doing for years or have been looking forward to for a while, so they have to get rid of all that just for year round schooling, which just started. Also, what if the parents already paid for that trip? That wouldn't be fair for them to pay good money on a trip that the whole family wanted to go on, just for year round school. Now if they want to go on a trip it has to be planned around the school's…

Another study states “students requiring academic support don't have to wait to go to summer school to get help. Instead, they can attend remedial classes early in the year to catch and fix problems quicker.”(pbs.org,2001). Without the long summer break, kids need less time to catch up and relearn so they can learn more and the entire school year. All in all year-round school improves student learning without burnout.…

As stated in the previous paragraph, there is proof that students lose valuable academic skills during a traditional summer break. This results in an average of four to six weeks at the beginning of a new school year in a traditional schedule being spent reviewing the previous school years material. When in the year round program the short breaks allow for students to retain their academic skills, resulting in less time reviewing and more time spent learning new material. In fact this increase time spent learning new material showed that year round schools had a 2.79 higher math gain and 1.61 higher reading gain over traditional schools. This is critical because first off many students quickly bore while learning old stuff and this may be connected to the 3% higher dropout rate in traditional schedule schools then year round and also less time spent reviewing may play into the higher attendance rates in year round…

Most students and parents disagree with this idea, and it comes off as a negative idea. In reality, this is not the case students who attend year round schooling actually have more time for this. They receive all kinds of breaks throughout the year that they could spend time with their friends or family and go on a family vacation at any time throughout the year not just in the summer. Little do we know year-round schooling has many more advantages than disadvantages, actually a lot of good things can come out of this. No one wants to give up their summer break for anything, especially school. Children enjoy their summer, it is the time they can do whatever with no interruption, like run outside all day, swim, or hang out with friends. Many teenagers have summer responsibilities, bailing hay, for example, is an all-day activity and is easier to start in the morning so it is not too hot and teenagers cannot bail hay for their parents or some old man who needs help if they have to be at school. With no teenagers making hay, for old men who need help, who is going to do it? Summer is also a time for families to visit other family members out of state or go on family vacations together, they cannot go on vacation with school taking up that time.…
