In the United States millions of students dropout of school each year. Currently the law states that students can legally drop out of school at age sixteen. The idea of lowering the age to fourteen is ridiculous, even allowing students to legally drop out at the age now is not wise and borders on child abuse. Dropping out of school at sixteen years old, let alone fourteen will impact the student for life. Young people are known to make hasty decisions without much thought to the outcome of their choice. Students who stay in school are at least offered some sort of safety net and protection from a cruel world. There are many challenges a student who doesn’t stay in school will face. They will earn less money, be less healthy, have poor relationships, and are more likely to go to jail. There’s always that phase every teenager hates going through and it’s being told what they can or cannot do. Many teens don’t realize that parents create these boundaries to keep their child safe and that some of their own decision making can lead to bad outcomes. Furthermore, just like every other teenager in the world there’s always that one person to test the limits. Most employers will not hire people that have not received a high school diploma. If the dropout age is lowered it’s likely that the U.S will see an increase in dropouts. With the availability of brain research, we now know that the part of the brain responsible for making good decisions does not take place until a person is in their mid-twenties. Why then, could a fourteen year old be accountable to make the decision to drop out of school? In the final analysis, if one doesn’t finish school they really don’t have a path for their future because high school is the main key to open up other opportunities for
