According to CDC's report, 75% of public schools start earlier than 8:30 in the morning in more than 40 states. Schools pay a big part in a student's schedules, by starting later students will be more awake and alert, better health, and get into fewer accidents. Professor Carskadon of psychiatry and human behavior said “Everyone learns better when they’re awake”. On average a teen needs about 8-9 hours of sleep each night, however, most students get around 7 hours each night. When a student gets the right amount of sleep, they will be more awake and engaged in the activities around them. Being stuck in a seat for 80 minutes can be boring. And trying not to fall asleep is a full time job without the proper hours of sleep. With school starting later, you can avoid being late, too. You would have enough time to get what you need and still get to school on time. That is if you wake up at a reasonable time. Not only is education important but so is health. In order to do your best, you need to be healthy. Similarly, for your body to grow and develop you have to get enough sleep. If you do not get enough sleep it will lower immune system and increase one’s chances of getting ill. Also, if a school starts later you will be able to have a proper and healthy breakfast. Maybe they drive their kids to school and their work starts earlier. Changing the time will not only affect the student's schedule but also the adults. Many parents drive and pick up their kids from school. They would have to shift their schedule to fit that in. In addition, many teachers are opposing the later start times. They are concerned about the extracurricular activities after school and how that would fit on with the other school start and end times.
