As of right now, 13 states drug test welfare recipients. The people who support welfare drug testing have quite a few reasons as to why they think it should happen. One of the biggest reasons I’ve seen as to why the recipients should be drug tested is that it could save taxpayers millions of dollars each year. By weeding out the people who do not obey the rules, the government will not have to use as much money on the citizens that receive welfare benefits. Another reason that I’ve seen on multiple sites is that it could deter drug use. They have many valid points, just as supporters of the legislation do. One of them is the question, “could you look a starving child in the face and deny them food?” It is well known that many of the benefits of welfare go to the children of impoverished families, and by asking this question, they are saying that it would be unfair to punish the children that need welfare benefits for their parent’s actions.
