Ban brominated vegetable oil in the United States!

Did you know that in many sodas, there is a toxic chemical called brominated vegetable oil? This chemical is put into sodas like Mt. Dew and Fanta Orange, to name a couple, so that the ingredients won’t separate. You can even see this chemical if you hold it up to the sunlight for example, Mt. Dew. When you hold it up it is cloudy. This chemical causes many health problems such as memory loss, skin rashes, severe acne, fatigue, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, and destroying of your metabolism. Brominated vegetable oil (BVO) can also cause cardiac arrhythmia. Cardiac arrhythmia is a disease in which your heart beats abnormally and causes your heart not to be able to pump blood effectively.

It is used in flame-retardants, pesticides, and liquids used in photography to name a few. In addition, we are putting a chemical that kills bugs into our bodies! When the human body ingests bromine, the bromine takes the place of other elements in our body that we need to survive which causes our body to shut down. Drinking these sodas is slowly killing us inside without us knowing.
Furthermore, 80% of the over 10,000 additives in our foods were once “Generally Regarded As Safe.” But the FDA “lacked relevant information, including toxicity data, about the safe amount to eat.” (Especially brominated vegetable oil.) Also, over 100 countries have banned this chemical. The main countries being Europe, India, and Japan. I guess that they were smart enough not to put something that’s original purpose was to be a flame-retardant for carpets in their bodies.
On the other hand, some people might not agree with this because they might say that the soda might separate. However, Coke and Pepsi have already replaced BVO with another synthetic chemical (that is not poisonous). This chemical is called sucrose acetate. Sucrose acetate is a very safe chemical that is already used in cocktail mixers, beer, and malts. Therefore, if Coke, Pepsi, and many other companies use sucrose acetate as a substitute for BVO, then other companies can too. This means that companies that use BVO will not be harmed if the USA banned brominated vegetable

According to a this term life infographic, drinking soda can cause asthma from the sodium benzoate, heart disease from the high fructose levels, and kidney issues from phosphoric acid. It can also cause obesity, and “70% of cardiovascular disease is related to obesity. 30% of gallbladder disease is related to obesity.” It is clear that soda is leading to obesity, but strictly limiting soda will not end the obesity problem, because there are other drinks that are responsible. Passing the soda ban would be inconsequential, because a majority of the people that drink large amounts of soda are aware that it is unhealthy.…

The Impact of High-Fructose Corn Syrup on Health: Exorbitant Consumption Perhaps the most polarizing issue regarding high-fructose corn syrup is its impacts on human health. I believe that health is truly the greatest wealth and that it is in the best interests of an individual to carefully make decisions regarding what one should eat. Therefore, it is necessary for me to understand the underlying health risks associated with high-fructose corn syrup consumption. The consumption of high-fructose corn syrup peaked in 1999, but since then it has been steadily declining (White, Foreyt, Melanson, & Angelopoulous, 2010).…

Soda is also refreshing, it can help with your thirst, and can help when you are sick too by heating it up in a cup and drinking it. If soda wasn’t taxed, people wouldn’t get angry and get violent over the taxing. One reason that soda shouldn't have a tax is that soda can actually improve your health in some ways. According to NY Daily News, "Acid in soda helps dissolve bezoars. Bezoars are an ingestible material in your…

I belive Mayor Bloomberg has good intentions by introducing this ban, but it’s the wrong approach. If Mayor Bloomberg is going to propose a partial soda ban, why not ban soda products as a whole? A health crisis has been taking place with the excessive selling of food products that have an excess of calories and no nutritional value. This is the case of beverages that contain high amounts of sweeteners and whose consumption has increased progressively in the last decades. This increase is partly due to many people prefer to drink a can of soda to accompany their meals or refresh their thirst, instead of preparing a natural juice or drinking water. This reality has made these drinks become part of the regular diet of most Americans, which has contributed to the increase of diseases such as obesity and type 2 diabetes. These and many other illnesses have a greater impact on children and adolescents, whom by being in the stage of growth…

To start with, limiting how much soda a person can consume, enforces restrictions that violate a person’s daily life. According to Sidney Anne Stone, the author of the text ‘’Ban the Ban!’’ she says,’’ when you take away the option to order a soda over a certain size, you have now removed my options.’’ ( Stone, 287) To further explain, Stone shows that by constricting how much soda someone can have, it eliminates a person’s ability to control their life.…

According to “Rich Food, Poor Food” ingredients commonly used in up to 80% of all American convenience food have been banned by other countries, with information about which countries banned each substance and why (Calton). Ranging from soda, or sugary artificial candy and carcinogenic ‘potato’ chips, many of the products are banned around the world in countries like Canada and the United Kingdom, and sometimes the entire European Union. The FDA, in spite of this, seems quite alright with these disease-linked substances that are laced within the food supply. And the USDA and EPA, other United States government funded food safety departments that controls the quality of our meat and produce, approved a highly dangerous pesticide that the European Union had banned just prior due to fears of environmental damage and public health (Colten). It does not make any logical sense as to why a country would knowingly allow its’ people to consume these foods and toxic chemicals.…
