Persuasive Essay On Thon Canning

THON canning is more than simply about getting to get together with friends over a weekend in the fall, it is about raising money to support the search for a cure for pediatric cancer, and support the Four Diamonds Foundation in its mission to aid children impacted by the disease. The following paper discusses why the decision to cancel canning events indefinitely at the Pennsylvania State University, while supported with valid arguments, is not the best option for the Penn State/THON community.

The overall purpose of the piece is to stimulate conversation on how canning may continue in the future as a THON tradition, instead of being abolished altogether. This is a relevant issue in that the “last” canning weekend ever was a few weeks ago, and while many first-year students enjoyed their first exposure to the event, many THON veterans were lamenting the fact that it was the last time students at the university would have this unique opportunity. The topic of THON canning is not lighthearted, considering that student deaths have occurred in recent years due to vehicular accidents that have taken place during canning weekends. Given this situation it was important that a respectful tone be taken throughout the paper. There is evidence of conceding to many of the points of the opposition, such as the inclusion of credible evidence on teen accident rates. Pathos is also used broadly in the paper in regards to both sides of the argument, for example, the paper discusses how the loss of money from canning could result in less money going towards fighting childhood

Sometimes, in sports or in life in general, there are favorites and underdogs. There is a general consensus that the favorite team or player will win but sometimes it`s the underdog that wins and receives all the honor related with that win. This is very similar to what I read about Seabiscuit and what I watched in the video of Jason McElwain. Some people have the ability to transcend their underdog status (ie. Red from Seabiscuit and Jason) and create something very special.…

Corey Turner remembers collecting participation trophies from the YMCA soccer program he was involved in as a young athlete. These trophies are now sitting in a dusty box somewhere in his parent's basement. This leads him to question whether or not young athletes should receive trophies for just showing up. Corey Turner is not alone, people across the nation have debated this issue for as long as youth sports have been in existence. I believe that kids should not get trophies for participating because kids should learn life lessons from both wins and losses and participation trophies do more harm than good.…
