Within the last couple decades, America has advanced immensely in technology. The advancement of smartphones has become a distraction for many teenagers and adults who drive. Smartphones have become a distraction because they take the focus of the driver off of the road which can potentially lead to property damage or injure another person. Texting and driving have become a major issue in America today because of the smartphones. Many teens and adults get distracted by calls, texts, and social media while driving which is dangerous and can put their life in danger and the lives of others around them. The statistics that come from texting and driving have increased significantly, a majority of drivers who call, text, or view social media are teenagers, although adults are also guilty as well. Therefore, Americans should be informed of the danger that comes from texting and driving. …show more content…
One writer found that, “Over 2.5 million people in the U.S. are involved in road accidents each year. The population of the US is just 318.9 million. At this rate, the American people could be extinct in two human lifespans. This is an astounding number of traffic accidents” (Ameen 1). Drivers do not realize how many accidents occur every day because not every accident is mentioned on the television, therefore, drivers do not have any concerns about the growing number of wrecks that texting and driving are causing among America's population. In Oklahoma alone, nearly 3,000 people die every year due to distracted driving. The number are astonishing and affect family, friends, and the communities
