The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) states that children under 2 should be discouraged from using technology and that preschool children should not be watching television or using digital devices for more than two hours a day. We are all firsthand witnesses to the desperation that can led many parents giving their phones or tablets to their children as a form of last resort. I can say I’m guilty of this act as well of buckling down under pressure and handing the tablet to my younger cousins when babysitting. This act has become almost instinctive in nature as our dependency on technology has grown. Whether this qualifies as bad parenting skills is up for discussion but the fact is that this is a trend that doesn’t seem to be going away. An overdependence on technology especially one that is engrained at such a young age can led to a plethora of issues such as harmful early brain development, attention deficit disorder, poor self-control and possibly led to depression or addiction later in life.
