Surviving the Dark To be a survivor a person does not need to be a giant. To be a survivor a person does not need battle scars or proof that they have fought and won. Some survivors are hard to spot and very unlikely candidates. To everyone a survivor is the obvious but that is not always the case. In truth, a survivor is someone who gets shoved down over and over again but can still get up, stand tall, brush off the filth of life, and smile. A survivor has the ability to rise up from rock bottom. They may be in dark times but a true survivor can ascend the staircase of darkness back up to the light. The staircase can be grueling and jagged, ensuring failure to those who can not survive. A great example of this comes from Dan Brown’s book, The Da vinci Code, when he writes, “The light came long after the thunder” (Brown 60) referencing Silas. Silas was a troublesome guttersnipe growing up and it was not long before he found himself in jail with no friends or family. He was beaten by the thunder of life. Silas, being a survivor, rose from the abyss he was in and found purpose in life with the help of a priest. Survivors find light even after so much darkness and hatred. They can go from the lowest point in life to a success.

If an individual can ignore the pain that they receive then they are most certainly a survivor. No matter how many gashes and slashes survivors still will thrash with life. Langston Hughes, the writer of a poem called “I, Too”, is a survivor. His poem proves it by saying, “Tomorrow, I’ll be at the table When company comes. Nobody’ll dare Say to me, ‘Eat in the kitchen,’ Then”(Hughes) which signifies how he continued with life after being shunned.. It hurt him to eat alone but he moved on proudly and defiantly, verifying that he is a survivor. Survivors fight the jail keeper called loneliness and fly their confidence to the moon. They can do amazing things after enduring
