Persuasive Essay On Standardized Testing

It is universally known that standardized testing is proven to be the bane of every high school student’s existence. The whole concept of standardized testing, whether it is the SAT or the ACT, is viewed as ludicrous to many young adolescents in high school. Many reasons include the fact that the whole aspect of standardized testing impacts a student’s academic career by adding unnecessary stress, by feeding students a false illusion of success, and by ultimately deceiving students by masking the test’s artificiality with a depiction of academic support. Given the fact that a high school student’s senior year are one of the most vital years of their secondary careers, it seems completely illogical to impose such tests on their shoulders. Senior students already have to apply for college, some of them might be taking rigorous AP classes, and most are involved in extracurricular activities. If they want to succeed on those tests, they will have to spend an egregious amount of time studying for it, which detracts their focus on their actual school work that colleges pay the most attention to. Since grades are one of the most important factors for colleges, it seems rather unfair to impose a test that requires hours of studying for. As Andy Hudlow, a writer for Knight Errant, mentions, “To expect the average student to manage their already challenging schedule while simultaneously studying for the ACT or SAT is unrealistic and unfair” (Hudlow, “Standardized Testing Is Not an Accurate Measure of Intelligence”). By instilling an exaggeration of the importance of the standardized tests to students, it might lead to the point of cheating. In addition, the amount of stress that is inflicted upon many young adolescents may also lead to test anxiety or health issues. Due to the fact that these tests are normally timed, the time limit may also impede a student’s overall performance.
