Multiple choice questions make standardized tests too easy. They give students a 25% chance of guessing and getting the question correct. When a student does not know the answer to a question and they guess, they can easily guess correctly. This can make it seem like one person knows more than another, but they could actually just have made a couple of lucky guesses. On the US news website it says that, “While the defendants' actions were not acceptable, the cheating was at least partly the result of the intense pressure placed on teachers to meet high-performance goals for themselves and for their students.” The teachers have so much pressure put on them that they do not know what else to do other than cheat. Standardized tests put an unhealthy amount of stress on teachers, students, and administrators.
Standardized tests assess college readiness. Tests such as ACT and SAT are used for college admissions. These tests do help colleges decide who they are going to accept, however, there are other ways colleges could do that. They could look at student grades and how they scored on their finals.
