One reason schools shouldn’t have competitive sports is that kids are young and can hurt themselves easily or sacrifice other opportunities. Many in the field of sports are young. 60% of boys and 47% of girls are competing on sports teams by the time they’re six years old. As the child grows, training intensifies and expands to the off-season, making practice essentially year-round. This might have the kids sacrifice other opportunities to be on sports teams. It is true that modern children don’t always get enough exercise, yet competitive sports shouldn’t be the only way children get healthy. As some kids are being over pressured with sports, others have little to no physical activities. Competitive sports leave out those kids and don’t bring any benefit to them at all. Illinois is the only state that requires mandatory PE in public schools (Spurlock, Documentary). Although some schools have gym every week or so, the amount of exercise the children get is usually not enough. Other schools do give kids the right amount of exercise but not the right diet. If schools were as focused and paid as much on giving everyone the proper amount of exercise and serving the right types of food as they are with competitive sports, then child obesity wouldn’t be as big a problem and competitive sports wouldn’t be as
