Persuasive Essay On Sharecropping

Today has ended another week of strenuous work. My family is sharecroppers on the land of Mr. Jones, one of the most powerful landowners in the area. He isn’t an honest man, he has put my parents into endless debt, debt so great, we will never get out of it. We land from him, and at the end of every season, give him a portion of the crops. The only thing is, the crops we don’t give to Mr. Jones, we have to sell. And we don’t get enough money from selling the crops, to weigh out how much we give to him. Because of this terrible thing, called sharecropping, we are in tremendous debt. But that doesn’t stop us from having a little fun. Today, we started planting cotton for the season. It’s hard work, and it normally takes all day just to get a portion of the fields done. We haven't gotten much done, and will have to work for the next while. Hopefully, we will have a good season, and grow lots of crops. If we do, we might be one step closer to being out of debt. And eventually having our own land! That would be so joyful! Think about great things, think about sad things, think about funny things, think about anything that takes my mind off of the idea of sharecropping. I’ve also got my sisters and brothers helping me along the way. It may have tolls on my body, but at least it’s not horribly awful. In the precious time I am not in the field this week, I found myself playing marbles. It is becoming an obsession. It is starting to be all I could think about!
