For the fall 2015 campaign, Calvin Klein Jeans stirs up some controversy yet again, this time with a series of advertisements focusing on “sexting”. Sexting has become the newest trend in the world of mobile devices and social media. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, sexting is defined as “the sending of sexually explicit messages or images by cell phone”. (1) By using this as the motif of their ads, it shows its viewers that this behavior along with rebellion and promiscuity is what is expected or desired from both men and women in society today. Sexting is no longer just a teen issue. Adults use it to spice up their marriages or to “emotionally” cheat on their significant other. Television, magazines, and even companies trying to sell their clothes—Calvin Klein being one of the most recent—glamorize sexting as a social norm.

The all black visual theme gives this ad a feeling of mystery and rebellion, which is what the market wants you to feel about sexting. It is supposed to be rebellious and daring. We are told that we are supposed to be rebellious. We are supposed to do something different from everyone else. In reality, if we sext we are doing what is the “norm”. According to dosomething.org, 40% of teenagers have sent sexually suggestive messages and 22% have sent nude or semi-nude photos.(2) While sexting may be considered the norm, many states have laws protecting minors, any person under the age of 18, from exploitation through the distribution of sexually implicit images.
