Sex Education
Many may question is sex education necessary for school students? Others may think that it 's a good idea that teachers are taking a step to help guide teens and young adults into the safe path. A sex education class will inform students about health and what major decisions they will make and how it will affect them in the future. To decrease teen pregnancies and infections diseases, schools should teach sex education on topics such as health, abstinence, and safe sex.

Abstinence is when a person decides to not have sex. Practicing abstinence is a good thing because it can prevent a person from getting pregnant and from catching a STD ( source 3).Rather than providing students with medically accurate lessons about sexual health, abstinence-only programs promote a moral agenda. Mary L. Gavin says, “When you are sexually active you are at risk of getting pregnant, catching a disease, and for girl you have to start getting on birth control. With abstinence, there is no pill or not risk because that person has decided not to have sex.” Avoiding all types of intimate genital contact including anal or oral sex is complete abstinence. Consistent abstinence means that someone practices abstinence all the time. Abstinence does not prevent AIDS, hepatitis B or C, they come from nonsexual activities like using contaminated needles. Not having sex seems easy but peer pressure and things that you watch on TV can make the decision to practice abstinence more difficult. Parents should start talking to their about sex at the ages of 9-12 years old. Most parents think that their child is not ready to have the “sex” talk, but it is important that the parent introduce the sex topic with their child. When your child first enters high school they are exposed to a lot of freedom and start to become curious about a lot of things. One of those things your child may be curious about is sex. At ages 14-18 years your child should fully understand the concept of sex, sexual health, and sexual orientation.
