Persuasive Essay On Self-Driving

Standing on the side of the streets in New York, the air full of the smells of industrialization and the sweat of animals. The days pass, the nights get shorter and the days longer, then as the nights begin to grow once more, the smells of the the bustling city change. What was once the perspiration of horses hard at work, has been replaced with burning of gasoline. On October 1, 1908, Henry Ford revolutionized the production of combustion vehicles; cars were made available to the middle class of the United States. However, with this new invention came many new risks. Gone were the days of vehicles the would self-correct if a collision was imminent. Drivers were now responsible for every motion made by the vehicle they traveled in. Now, more than 100 years of technological leaps and bounds later, self-correcting vehicles are back. Except, these vehicles do more than self-correct, they are self-driving. These new vehicles bring many solutions, as well as new problems, to the world of transportation. They have the potential to eliminate accidents caused by driver incapacitation, but they open a new world of ethical debates that may demand societal changes. However, with many critical ethical issues arising from the use of self-driving cars, it comes into question whether this new technology is worth the risk or not. With the potential of accidents being determined years in advance, programmers and politicians could be held accountable for these possible injuries or even fatalities. But the number of the accidents to occur would be reduced dramatically, and unproductive, stressful driving time would be eliminated from the white collar schedule. Perhaps, a solution for this conundrum will be solved in the near future by yet another technological jump, bringing science fiction one step closer to science
