Salton Sea is the largest inland body of water in California, measuring at 35 miles long and 15 miles across. Its salt level is fifty percent saltier than the ocean itself. The Salton Sea is beneficial to more than four hundred and twenty different species of birds. The species range from “white and brown pelicans to eared grebes, curlews, ibis, avocets and snowy plovers. It also supports millions of fish and a host of invertebrates, important food sources for the birds.” (Blogger, 2015)
Salton Sea is a major problem because water is evaporating faster than water getting put back into the lake. We can all allow the government to come up with a solution to fix Salton Sea but that might take longer than other solutions. We as a nation can spend tens of billions of dollars to create a system that can produce fresh water by using ocean water, but that might take years to be able to produce large amounts of fresh water at a time. Both ideas, are great ideas, but they are both long term ideas. We need to find a solution that can help Salton Sea as soon as a possible.
Proposed Solution
Here at Salton Sea Restoration we suggest that the people of California can be the short-term solution. We need to raise awareness and get people involved. A recent report from “…announced that urban Californians’ monthly water conservation declined to 17.7 percent in August.” (Kostyrko, 2016) Marketing campaigns need to be set in place to reach out to people. The more people understand the problems that occur if Salton Sea is not saved, the better chance we have to fight this problem.
