Safe haven is a is a law that allows parents to drop off their baby at health care clinics, police stations, fire stations, emergency medical technicians (EMT), and churches, and other places the state has deemed acceptable the mother remains anonymous and will not be reported to the police , investigated or criminally prosecuted. However, in most states if the child has been abused when dropped off at location deemed a safe place the parent abandoning the child can be prosecuted. Safe haven laws are the product of states trying to give a safer and better alternative to throwing babies in the garbage, killing them, Leaving them in a public bathroom or any other form of abandoning a child. Texas was the first state to intact safe haven laws in 1999 and by 2008 all the states had some form of safe haven law in action. The purpose of the law is to provide a safe environment for unwanted babies between the age of 72 hours and 1 month depending on the state the mother lives in.
